but not as good as her more recent books

This vintage Roberts book (1990) is okay, but not as good as her more recent books. Plus, I liked the other books in the O'Hurley series better than this one.

While reading this book, I wondered if the writing of it (it's a romantic spy/intrigue book) led Roberts to contemplate writing something other than romance, thus leading to her J.D. Robb series. (I might mention here that I am NOT a fan of the J.D. Robb books/series. Maybe that's why this one only got 3 stars.)

Noc Ad #1 - let the journey begin

Although it seems to be another addition to the burgeoning youth fantasy genre, "Nocturnal Academy" is a pleasant surprise in that it is a refreshing mesh of fantasy and science fiction with strong characters and an interesting new angle on familiar supernatural creatures.

The story itself is set in the fictional town of Appleton and follows young Alice Dibble as she finds herself victimized and misunderstood trying to prepare for her first year of high school, dodging bullies and thugs at Primary School as she does so. She finds herself approached and accepted into the prestigious local high school - the titular Nocturnal Academy. Within its walls she discovers that she is a night-dweller and a whole world of adventure suddenly opens up to her.

The plot is well paced and never has a dull moment. However even before she settles into her new school, Alice finds herself caught in a demonic plot that involves a mysterious book and summoned spirits. Since she seems to be right at the centre of these events, Alice finds herself in terrible danger with the Nocturnal Academy her only sanctuary.

This is the first part of a series set in the Academy and detailing its bizarre, ancient staff members and an excellent beginning. The series is aimed at younger teenagers, however it is well written enough that it will likewise appeal to adults as well. The story is certainly no Shakespeare; however it is a marvellous page-turner and a great read. The reasons for this are primarily because of the depth of character that Somerville pours into Alice who is both sensible and sympathetic.

The story swings between her broken family (her mother during the week and her father plus new girlfriend on weekends) and the action at the Academy. Despite the Academies' characters being all essentially creatures of the night, the stories' themes focus on their humanity and the familiar idea that with great power must come great responsibility. The other theme that Sommerville advocates is that someone's god-given abilities should never be used to subjugate or gain power over other people...an incredibly refreshing angle in this genre's more modern stories that often glamorize the supernatural individual's ability to use their powers for personal gain.

This is an excellent story and, provided Alice survives a few more novels, I am quite looking forward the continuing adventures of Alice Dibble and the Nocturnal Academy.

Supernatural entertainment

Most school-aged children who are a little bit different and have trouble fitting in with the crowd often find themselves victimized and misunderstood, and Alice Dibble is no exception. Not yet a teenager, Alice is an awkward child who longs to be accepted into a prestigious local high school - the Nocturnal Academy - if only to escape the thugs who have made her primary school life a misery. In being accepted against the odds, Alice discovers her night-dweller genes and a world of adventure (but also one of great danger) is suddenly opened up to her.

So begins the Nocturnal Academy by Ethan Somerville. While the book might appear at first glance to be yet another contribution to the YA fantasy sub genre set around an educational institution for gifted misfits, it is noticeably different, a refreshingly compelling SF-fantasy hybrid with strong characterization and a not-quite-traditional view of familiar supernatural creatures.

The plot moves along at a fairly rapid pace, a little too brief with narrative description sometimes, but with never a dull moment. Even before she has started at her new school, Alice is caught up in a demonic plot when her father's girlfriend discovers a mysterious book during a ghost tour of an old factory - and begins to summon spirits from it. Being so near the centre of these events puts Alice in grave personal danger, and the only place she can turn to for help is the Nocturnal Academy.

This is the first installment in a series set around the school and its strange, ancient staff, and it is a sound beginning. Aimed at younger teenagers (though certainly enjoyable by adults as well), the prose is brisk, not high literature by any means, but good solid page-turning material, a very good read. This is primarily because of the depth and empathy Somerville brings to the character of Alice, who is sensible and compassionate. Shuttling between her mother with whom she spends the week, and her father and his new girlfriend, Alice must effectively look after herself as the adults around her are naturally distracted by their own problems. The way in which she does this strikes a very fine balance between sympathy and rebellion, and because Alice is so young, at the boundary of childhood and adolescence where credibility gives way to skepticism, her point of view brings with it a kind of outraged innocence. Thematically the story concentrates on the humanity of the characters and the fundamental notion that with power comes responsibility and that great talents should not be used to gain power over others - which is refreshing in a genre that has come so often to glamorize supernatural evil.

A good story, and I am looking forward to following Alice on other adventures through the Nocturnal Academy... if she survives!

Fascinating series begins.

Alice, who is 12, finds herself changing, then finds herself accepted into the prestigious Nocturnal Academy. Turns out she's actually becoming a vampire, and the school is for creatures of various sorts.

She's also the victim of bullying and it continues to get worse. Her father is living with his girlfriend. A girlfriend who just happens to have opened a gate into the Immaterium, a place of very evil creatures.

So Alice has to adapting to her changes, deal with her father's evil girlfriend, and stop a full-scale invasion of the Earth by creatures from the evil dimension while, at the same time, avoid being killed by the bullies who have becoming increasingly violent. It all makes for an extremely good read.

The Thran!!!

I've just finished the Thran section of the book. And if the Brothers War is as good as the Thran this book would be one of the greatest books i've read this year. Yawgmoth was an incredibly well written character. A monster and angel. I loved every page. J. Robert King did a fine job of introducing players of the game to the novel format. I never thought, being a serious player of the game, that the novels could be this engrossing. Spectacular. I look forward to the next omnibus and hope that Wizards decides to format the entire series in such a manner. R.A Salvatore's Drizzt Collection isnt the only story line that deserves HARDCOVERED attention!!!!!

A solid accomplishment considering

The narrative can often fall into a tedious telling of events as though the novel were more of a factual accounting of record rather than drawing you into the experience of what it "feels" like to be there. This is, however, still far above average writing for the source material, and I would say as long as your interest in Magic is great, you will probably enjoy this book.

If you want to go deeper in MTG, BUY THIS

This is one of the most exciting books I ever read.

For the fans of MTG this book will lighten up most of the doubts on how it all started: the birth of Phyrexia (The Thran) and the ascencion of Urza ( Brother's War).

The books are well written and the action is great in both. Non stoping fights, creations of war and the birth of magic itself, together with the artifacts we all see in the TCG is constant.

I'm not really good at writting reviews, but here is my advice:

If play MTG you MUST buy this. If you dont, this is a GREAT fiction book, with a nice setting and characters that should hold your attention for sometime, if you are into magic related histories.

This book is brilliant! I did a module in statistics last semester but failed it. My lecturer is average/good but I have to admit that I’m poor at understanding statistics. My parents bought me this book in desperation. I told them not to bother as I haven’t a chance of passing the repeat exam. To my utter shock I could understand everything. The book is laid out in very simple steps which makes it very easy to follow. After 10 minutes of reading I couldn’t believe that I could understood some statistics. Chapters 8 and 9 were simple and my exam is based mainly on these chapters. Bring on the exam, I’m good to go now.

This is a fine book on Greco-Roman costume. The author is particularly good on Roman, Late Roman, and Byzantine cloths. Of greatest interest is the discussion of Eastern Orthodox vestments and their relation to Byzantine court costumes.

This book comprise 41 chapters, covering topics like Telepathy, Personal Magnetism, Trance, Spirtualism and Mediumship, Hypnotism and Mesmerism, Psychometry, Clairvoyance, Automatic Writing, Apparitions, Reincarnation, What Happens After Death, Crystal Gazing, etc. There are also exercises to try out.
Some books on developing psychic skills also cover chakras. This topic is not covered in this book, though. However, it is a very complex topic and deserve a treatment on its own in a separate book.
A index (which it doesn't have) at the end of the book would be useful.

Incredibly detailed book that feels more like a college textbook than a work of fiction. The authors have painstakingly brought to life your favorite locations and provide a myriad of notations and details that only the biggest Star Wars nerd would love. If you are even considering this book, then make the purchase!

Incredible illustrations, charts, maps, and new expanded universe information make this a must have.

Only minor quibble is the print can be very small in places.

Eye Opening

Just an outstanding picture book full of "Complete Locations" from all the SW movies with cross sections, maps, beautiful drawings, fold outs and details about each.

Where to start? My daughter, age 12, will be Rey for Halloween. We've made a decent replica of her outfit and staff. I saw the cover of the DK(we've used DK for travel many times to give you a look at what you'll see) showing Rey's AT-AT home. It lays it out on 2 pages( and the book is a large book with ~200 pages, everything in color) all the many details about her home with trap doors, living space, 'garage' for her speeder, Y-wing salvaged computer and flight simulator, etc; including short write-ups about the details, e.g., she wove her sleeping hammock as a child. Also, on the Episode 7 chapter, there's a neat map of Jakku, that lays out the land and where Rey travels, Maz's castle, Resistance base, First Order Military, and Starkiller Base. The kiddoes are hoping for a Rey sequel soon.

The colorful book starts with a forward by SW production designer Doug Chiang. There's an intro about the Republic and Empire showing their galaxy and giving interesting planet profiles(I know so much now). Episode One includes: Naboo, Otah Gunga(think Jar Jar), Droid ship, Mos Epsa on several pages including a pull-out, Watto's Junkshop, Anakin's hovel, several battle fields and cities.

Episode 2 goes into detail about those prolonged speeder chases, Outlander club, Jedi temple, romantic Naboo retreats, Kamino, Tipoca city, Tatooine and space ports, Geonosis(the ringed planet), droid factory and many more talking about the different battles and forces involved. Actually, flipping through this volume has clarified many things about these movies which I found more complicated than the earlier ones(Episodes 4-6).

Episode 3: Coruscant Battle(quite detailed), Jedi temple complex, Palatine's office, Utapau, Pau city, Kashyyyk(Think Wookies. It's making my head spin with all these names!), a Wookiee tree(kids like it), more battle fronts, Mustafar and the famous, and, I think, over drawn out, as far as the movie, (Episode 3 is not my favorite) duel scene, Polis Massa, and a medcenter.

Episode 4(my favorite episode): Tatooine map in detail, Lars homestead, Ben's house(neat place!), Mos Eisley(of course) and the Cantina(I can hear the music), Death Star cross section, and the Great Temple seen near the end off the movie(Hmm, never thought much about that).

Episode 5: a really nice expansive fold-out of Battle of Hoth and Echo base, Dagobah and Yoda's house, Cloud City.

Episode 6: Jabba's Palace(No Pizza Hut!) and throne room, Battle of Endor, Ewok village(again, a kid's favorite), Death Star- numero 2, Emperor's lair, and Executor Command Tower.

Finally, there's a table of context and index, but just browsing will keep you and your children fascinated for hours. Just a brilliant work with creative, incredible drawings- food for the mind, fun for the heart.
