While a rich literature exists on the effects of health-related fear appeals on audiences, researchers have yet to fully explore the role that other discrete emotions play in health communication processes and outcomes. This book fills that gap by providing an overview of the role of nine different emotions—both positive and negative—in various prevention-focused health communication settings. It also introduces readers to commonly employed emotional theories and concepts and relates them to literature on prevention-focused health and policy communication. In addition to reviewing and synthesizing the literature, this book offers new directions to researchers hoping to improve the effectiveness of prevention-focused health messages.

Just another Warhammer Novel

This is another installment of the Warhammer universe, well written, a nice pace to the story.
Characters are well thought out, full in presentation, and we can like them for what they are, from the new volunteer ( Lanz ), to his 3 Musketeer like companions, older and somewhat wiser veterans of battle.

This book is better than some I have read of the setting, however I find only more of the same.

Just a good book to kill time with, nothing more, noting less.

The book just kinda leaves you wanting to know where these people end up after it all, but cant answer that question as the "war" goes on, but in the world of Warhammer what else can you expect ?

Lots of funny banter and exciting battle scenes

"Call To Arms" is yet another good read from the Empire Army Series. Third entry in the series, it differs from its two predecessors in that, whereas "Reiksguard" and "Iron Company" focused on the roles, respectively, of elite knights and gunnery engineers in the Imperial Army, this novel gives the spotlight to the Scarlets, a well-regarded infantry regiment.

The novel, which can be read as a standalone, has three parts. Part One introduces us to young Dieter Lanz, a new recruit to the Scarlets and foster son of a retired Scarlet who is now a miller. Taught how to fight with a sword since he can walk, Dieter gets to see battle right away, for non-human enemies -- beastmen, goblins, and orcs -- of the empire, newly united by a cunning orc chieftain named Ironfang have invaded a province, and the army in that province has mobilized quickly to fight the enemies.

Within a short time, Dieter gets to show his mettle and bravery, which win him the respect and friendship of Sgt. Bohlen, Rieger, Gerhardt, and Holst. These four men are older than Dieter and protect his back when he gets into trouble with two shady Scarlets.

Unfortunately for the Scarlets, their commanding general makes a fatal mistake. Thousands of the empire army are killed. The remaining men have to flee from the enemies.

Part Two opens with the Count responsible for defending the imperiled province welcoming the Emperor's personal emissary. A decision is made that a general who has previously been forced to retire should be called back to duty. We learn that Dieter, his comrades, and the two shady Scarlets are alive, but even as they continue to fight the enemies, and Dieter gets to put his experience working at a mill to good use in fighting a feared monster troll, Dieter also grows increasingly afraid of getting ambushed by the two shady Scarlets.

Part Three is when the newly recalled general makes his move. Commanding an army that is much, much smaller than the enemy's, the general can only win by outmaneuvering Ironfang. Will he succeed?

Of the first three books in the series that I've read, this one, in my opinion, has the best mix of good dialog (lots of funny banter!), character development (Dieter grows up quickly after getting thrown into battle immediately after becoming a Scarlet), and exciting battle scenes (the wolf riders and trolls are fearsome!). It's still not great literature, but it's a really fun and satisfying read!

A light read.

I have not read any of the Empire Army series nor have I played Warhammer. This was a curiosity read and it wasn't bad. It's quick and if I could describe it I would say the book feels like a board game rather then a story.

I wondered if this was a continuation of the series but it has enough to be it's own story.

The story line centers on young Dieter Lanz who seeks to be a recruit of the sword infantry known as the "The Scarlets" His retired foster father Helmut Schau, a respected warrior of the unit, trained him in the ways of soldiering since he was a child. Over time Dieter developed a child's admiration of Scarlets. His fantasy starts to change when he meets Holst who is a member of the Scarlets. Holst is nothing like his imagination of a grand soldier of the Scarlets. They bribe a ride on a support wagon and head off toward the regiment which was called out to deal with a large raiding force of greenskins(Orcs and Goblins).

The idealistic Dieter quickly learns about the realities of war especially when he witnesses the defeat of the army poorly led by a political general rather then a combat general. His dreams of heroics are replaced by flight and fight as the Greenskins hunt the survivors.

I liked the characters and did find the banter between them funny at times. The ending was predictable and the story felt like it ended before it was finished. I will admit I wanted more. Dieter learned the battle was won but the war goes on. However, this is probably it for Dieter and the Scarlets.

An Excellent Overview of the field

Regan does a good job at presenting a overview of brain eletrophysiology and ERPs. This book is a valuable resource to any ERP researcher. It covers a variety of aspects within the field, and also proves to be a nice resource for suggestions of further literature of the various topics covered in the book. Hope to see a new edition of this book someday, as it is now out of print and hard to find.

More Norse legends for our time

Fans of Joanne Harris's epic "Runemarks" have had a long three-year wait for this sequel, "Runelight". Fortunately, the wait has not been in vain; the sequel is a stupendous follow-on from the earlier book, easily exceling its predecessor in every possible way. Indeed, the book is a veritable tour-de-force, quite as action-packed as the earlier volume but now with a much more balanced and controlled story-line that never feels contrived or contorted, carries plenty of mystery and intrigue, managing to pop up a fair few surprises along the way, usually just at the point where you're convinced you've worked out what's going to happen next. The text has an easy flow to it, provides plenty of humour pitched for all age groups and all in all offers not a single dull moment throughout its entire 570-odd pages. No fan of the earlier volume could possibly be disappointed by 'Runelight' (if you haven't read the earlier book you would be well advised to do so before tackling this one) especially as while coming to a nice, satisfying conclusion, there are nevertheless clear options for more to come in the future.

Let us just hope that Joanne Harris doesn't keep us all waiting quite so long for the next one!

Well written, but...

This is the sequel to Runemark and I strongly recommend that you read Runemark first. The story continues (a few years later) the fantasy based around Norse gods and their associated worlds and myths. It is the sort of thing I would expect to like and there were plenty of good things about it but somehow it just didn't quite draw me into its world or grip me with its story.

Joanne Harris writes very well. She has an easy, readable style and creates original characters. I liked the modern-day characterizations like the two dim, thuggish wolf-humans calling each other "dude," and her world is well painted. I find it hard to put my finger on why I didn't really respond to the book. One factor was that the writing, although good, seems a little one-paced. Around page 130, for example, a tremendous event occurs but the tone didn't really change and it didn't seem to excite me any more than the scene-setting before it. I found this throughout the book and ended up being a little unsatisfied by it.

Another problem for me was the sheer complexity of the world's make-up and of the relationships, friendships and enmities among its huge number of characters and peoples (I use the word loosely.) There is a very helpful diagram of the Worlds, a good map and a cast of characters (plus a good synopsis of Runemark for new readers) but even with this I found myself rather lost among who was at war with whom and why.

Plainly others have enjoyed this book enormously and I can see why so please don't let me put you off, but I'm afraid it didn't quite do it for me.

I ordered this book for my 14 year old son who had read the first book (actually 3 times) and was eagerly awaiting book number 2. Since he got this for Christmas he's been up late at night reading and loves it.

Wonderfully written book.

This is from the my perspective as a basic research scientist and sometimes informal hiker and naturalist who never took zoology or botany too seriously, but on a whim wanted to know more about plant evolution.

This is a wonderful book. It is engagingly written, and more importantly isn't a litany of facts, but rather discusses the topic in the context of biomes, geology, and the evolutionary solutions reached by plants.

One small modification would be useful. Although the book is remarkably jargon free a few more terms in the glossary would have been useful to the non specialist. This said, as a non-specialist I read this book cover to cover and highly enjoyed it.

Fossil plants

This is a user friendly sized book reviewing the evolution of plants. The oldest plants are found in rocks 3,500 million years old, the stromatolites and prokaryotes. From that beginning the book describes the evolution of the mosses and ferns, and the living trees with the longest geologic history: Cycads, and Ginkgos. The rest of the book describes the evolution of Gymnosperms and Angiosperms and flowering plants.

Well written and comprehensive, but not encyclopedic. I enjoyed reading and refering to it.

Good work

A well explained evolution of plants linked with the major enviroment changes ocurred along Earth history. You end up learning alot of botanical concepts and undestanding the different evolutionary reasons which led to the diversity of extant plants. Very interesting.

Steve Pace is a freelance aviation history writer, a contributing editor to Flight Journal, and the author of numerous articles and short features on a variety of aircraft and related subjects, as well as thirty aviation history books, including The Big Book of X-Bombers and X-Fighters (2016). A companion to We Real Cool: Black Men and Masculinity, hooks's 23rd book for adults is a fierce, quirky denunciation of patriarchy and a clarion call to the uncommitted to align themselves with visionary radical feminism. In 12 slim chapters, hooks examines the stages of a man's life, from babyhood through boyhood to the teenage years into manhood. She finds patriarchy plays a role in most socio-sexual ills, as boys and men seek alienating sex as a substitute for the love that often seems, because of demands on families that destroy them or keep them from forming, unavailable to men: "Sex, then, becomes for most men a way of self-solacing. It is not about connecting to someone else but rather releasing their own pain." The men who can lead us out of patriarchal chains are "men of color from poor countries, men who live in exile, men who have been victimized by imperialist male violence"-the Dalai Lama for example. While she calls Will Smith films such as Men in Black and Independence Day tools of the patriarchy, hooks saves her big guns for J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, scornfully exposing them as foisted on us by "rich white American men" and no more than updated version of the British schoolboy books that fueled the fantasies of Victoria's empire. A better book to buy for children, she suggests, might be her own recent Be Bop Buzz. Hooks is always readable, but her takes on mass media here have a retro ring to them.

Great book. bell hooks is one of our most prominent scholars who makes feminism accessible to everyone, and also demonstrates the benefits of a feminist perspective for everyone, not just women. Read this when it was published and couldn't put it down. Recently bought it again and gave it to my boyfriend. He struggles with masculine expectations, people in his life have urged him to be more tough and manly. He read this in a couple of days and came out with a thoughtful analysis of how patriarchy has influenced his life and the people he's known. He doesn't call himself a feminist but he has a critique of how harmful patriarchy is.
