Fun Read (An Editor's Review)

I do enjoy William Meikle, and this story has a lot of fun horror elements that made it a must-read for me. Meikle's writing is good, solid, though not without its weaknesses and the unavoidable typos. The plot here was fairly strong, characterization particularly good, but there are some plot holes, and settings were often very difficult to visualize. I love the whole concept, though, and the main "monster" is beautifully done. Rarely can an author describe a monster adequately, but Meikle achieves that and more here. The concept is strongest toward the beginning and begins to lose steam near the end, where we get a bit overwhelmed by multiple adversaries. The big plan at the end is a bit muddled and hard to follow, as well. Not a dissatisfying ending, though. However, all the story elements, especially the character development, only get better as the novel progresses. Really nice job on that. The story itself stays strong throughout with only two weak spots. There are some cheesy elements, but that's part of the charm of this kind of horror, I think. It's not done in a way that is divergent with the story, so I don't see any reason to complain about it. The construction is a bit stuttery in the beginning, but evens out at about the 20% mark. I have very few complaints on the whole. Meikle's plots are almost always spot-on for me, and I rarely find myself dissatisfied at the end of one of his novels, this one included.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed The Valley, like most of Meikle's work. He's a talented writer and his work is a must for horror readers and writers alike.

About the Author
J. Scott Duvall (PhD. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the coauthor with George H. Guthrie of Biblical Greek Exegesis: A Graded Approach to Learning Intermediate and Advanced Greek and with Terry G. Carter and J. Daniel Hays of the textbook Preaching God's Word: A Hands on Approach to Preparing, Developing and Delivering the Sermon.

J. Daniel Hays (ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is dean of the Pruet School of Christian Studies and professor of Old Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the author of From Every People and Nation, and he has coauthored Grasping God's Word; Preaching God's Word; Journey into God’s Word; The Story of Israel: A Biblical Theology; Iraq: Babylon of the End Times?; Apocalypse; and The Dictionary of Biblical Prophecy. He teaches adult Sunday school at his local church in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and preaches frequently throughout the nation.

About the Author
Paul Volponi is a writer, journalist, and teacher living in New York City. From 1992 to 1998, he taught incarcerated teens on Rikers Island to read and write. This experience formed the basis of Black and White and Rikers High. From 1999 to 2005, Mr. Volponi taught teens in a drug-treatment program. The experience inspired him to write Rooftop. Mr. Volponi is also the author of Rucker Park Setup, Hurricane Song, and Response. An ardent street ball player, Mr. Volponi draws upon his more than four decades of New York City court-sense to write The Final Four.

A Fast, Furious and For Real Story

Excellent book and very exciting read Mr. Volponi. The story works on so many levels that anyone should feel at home in between its pages. It's not only a book for young adults, as I, an older battle scarred warrior, gained much pleasure and insight from the story.

All the excitement of watching a classic basketball tournament game is injected into this story. You'll catch yourself cheering for or against a team or player as if you've placed a bet down in Vegas. Though the primary focus is on four of the young players and their challenges on and off the basketball court, it's the inspiring people who've touched their lives that make this story go. If it were a movie the Oscar for supporting actor would be split between the two head coaches.

The pace of the story is not unlike a basketball game full of intense drama; up tempo fast breaks, slowed down game planning, exciting offense, pressuring defense and a heart pounding climax. Very creative idea using the historic Trojans vs Spartans battle as a theme for the competitors and their showdown. While one team must win and the other has their tournament bubble burst, the life lessons learned from a team experience is worth more than any trophy. Who, besides those playing the game, knew that basketball is a game of communication? Author Paul Volponi does!

I suppose the release date of this book was meant to coincide with the college March Madness schedule. It sure works for me as I will be tuned in to hopefully see yet another Cinderella team make a run at the championship.

Heart pounding action on and off the bball court

"Live Radio Broadcast of the Game.
There are three broadcasters, a play by play man, a color commentator, and sideline reporter", Laura also known as Book Snob.

Note: The book review of Final Four will be written in a similar format to parts of the book.

Color Commentator: Ladies and Gentlemen, this is it, the final four, the big game between Michigan State Spartans and underdog, Troy University Trojans. Who will win remains to be seen, but both sides are anxious to move up to the championship game. "The last time the Spartans and the Trojans met for stakes this high was in the Trojan War of Greek Mythology, when the Spartans left a huge horse outside the gates of Troy." pg. 6. I wonder, will the Trojans rewrite history here tonight?

Side line reporter: There are 4 main players being represented in tonight's game, I mean book.

Malcolm is the leading scorer for the Spartans as a freshman and is ready to make his move into the NBA. He is a little cocky and self-serving but maybe he has earned it. He recently lost his sister in a drive-by shooting and you can see her image tattooed on his arm.

Michael Jordan also plays for the Spartans and you guessed it, was named after the famed NBA star Michael Jordan. Michael is a junior benchwarmer thrown into the game. He is roommates with Malcolm and lives under the shadow of his name.

Roko Bacic AKA Red Bull is a junior playing for Troy. He is a native Croatian who has lived in the states since his senior year of high school. His uncle taught him to play basketball on the streets of Croatia and now he is living his dream, playing college basketball. His parents are very proud of him. His uncle was killed by the Croatian mob.

Crispin Rice: A senior who plays for the Trojans is in love with a girl named Hope and she becomes known as his good luck charm and is nicknamed, Hope of Troy. He proposed to her in front of live television about 6 weeks earlier. I wonder how things are going with this young couple. Crispin needs to remain focused here today as the two teams head into battle.

Play by Play man: I can't believe it folks, we are heading in to overtime tonight. These teams are tightly matched and the players all deserve to come out on top. You will have to read the book to find out what team wins the game.

Volponi, has written a book that takes place entirely during one basketball game. Reading the Final Four is like having front row seats during a competitive game, where you know the key players first hand, their backgrounds, hopes, dreams and even failures. The Final Four is full of court action, interviews, journal entries and play by play commentary.

Side Line Reporter:
I am not a big basketball fan so I am not sure I am qualified to report on the game, but the book was awesome for someone who doesn't know much about basketball. For people who play the game, I can only imagine that they would love a book like this. Final Four is fast paced, full of street courts and college ball, living a tough life and then living a dream. Volponi doesn't shy away from some of the issues related to college ball like the fact that lots and lots of people are making money off the games, yet the players play for free and the aren't allowed to take any gifts or sell any of their tickets for games. It is interesting to look at these issues and more, through the eyes of the players in The Final Four.

THE FINAL FOUR IS A SLAM DUNK! You don't have to know anything about basketball to get hooked.

For those who follow me on Twitter and Goodreads, it's no secret that I am a huge fan of Paul Volponi's. I became intrigued by his work when RESPONSE received the Milwaukee County Teen Book Award Honor in 2010. After that, I devoured his novels and dubbed Paul the King of Urban YA Fiction.

THE FINAL FOUR is one of Paul's finest novels. Volponi writes about March Madness, the time when the best college basketball teams play for the NCAA Championship. It's huge money, huge exposer, huge pressure. Volponi tells the story of two teams battling in the Final Four through the eyes of four players. Interspersed are newspaper and TV interviews, commentary. One of the characters is Michael Jordan-imagine what it must be like to love basketball, be named after one of the best players to ever play in the NBA, and always having to deal with being compared to your namesake: THE Michael Jordan. Another character is Malcolm McBride, a young man who'a nickname is "One and Done" because he's only playing one year of college ball until he's eligible to enter the NBA draft. Malcolm's outlook on life has definitely been shaped by poverty and the horrible experiences that have plagued his life. Crispin Rice is a character I really enjoyed, a leader for sure. But his life isn't as storybook as the media makes it out to be. My favorite character is Roco Bacic who survived some horrific experiences in Croatia to come to the US and fulfill his dream of playing basketball. Some of his story is told through a personal journal that captures unforgettable moments of terror.
The reader becomes immersed in the players' lives on and off the basketball court. The novel is rife with raw emotion, tragedy, and triumph.
There were several passages where I shook my head in awe. Even if you rarely on never read realistic fiction, THE FINAL FOUR should be your first. Get swept away in March Madness.
I highly recommend this novel for young men - seventh grade and up - who are reluctant readers. THE FINAL FOUR may very well be just the novel to inspire a love for reading.

Theoretical seismology and seismic waves are clearly delivered. To researchers who are interesting in earthquakes it is a good reference. The book is in a good readable condition, though it's a used book coming from library shelf. The service is excellent and the shipment is fast.

A Masterful Theater Experience

I first saw "Art" performed in London in April of 1997, and it had a profound effect upon me. I did not have the privilege of seeing it with Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stout, but I did see it with three excellent actors. Since then I have seen in it in various other venues. It is almost actor-proof and doesn't require stars.
It is a play that does not read particularly well; it is very talky, and it needs the interpretive actors to carry it along. At times reading it you feel as if this is theater of the absurd, but when you see it performed it isn't; it is realistic, but satiric.
It's a play told in very a human and particularized way about friendship, egos, loyalty, communication, esthetics and human nature. Serge buys a more than bland painting; his friend Marc says he hates the painting (partly because he wasn't consulted about the purchase). Marc is unhappy because his friend has turned on him so he seeks the backing of Yvan, a peacemaker and compromiser who says he is moved by the painting, sees or feels resonance in the art, hoping to take a middle ground between the two others.
There are speeches to the audience in which characters comment on each other. Arguments blossom out from the painting to every aspect of their friendships. Each of the three men is a different kettle of fish, and it may be their differences that kept them together.
At the end Serge makes the supreme act of reconciliation and friendship. The last lines of the play spoken by Marc are moving and telling. He presents an interpretation of the painting and the real meaning of the picture and the play may be "no man is an island."
Try to see a flesh and blood acting version of this play. The script doesn't do it justice.

'Art' rules!

What can I say. This has to be one of my favourite plays of all time! It was also one of the most challenging plays that I prepared for as an amateur actor but ultimately extremely rewarding. Anyone looking for a 'killer' monologue should check out Yvan's 2 and a half page rant in the middle of the play.

Sat down and read this over the table with two other friends. By the end of it we sat gaping at what just transpired. A read that leaves a feeling something amazing just happened.

Sohel Akhter is a program management consultant, trainer, and an adjunct professor for City University of New York's MBA program. He is a top-level management professional with a distinguished management history of over fifteen years in information technology, networking, and software engineering within multiple industry settings.
Among Sohel's many other specialties are: PMO setup, WI MAX deployment, SAP implementation, strategic planning, business automation, and enterprise solution. Additionally, he has led many companies to success with his excellent project management skills, including banks, multinationals, SMB, IT service providers, and ISPs. He has also been the CTO in a large IT organization and has managed technical teams that consisted of over two hundred employees.

My number 1 ranked PMP study material

In studying for my PMP exam, I have examined and trail-studied many-many books; Trying to ultimately find one main book to study from, which would provide the most fluid information, and prepare me the most for the exam.

Sohel Akhter's book was by far the most fitting and my number one selection. I used this book as my main study material.

I like the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Exam prep, best mainly because of a few key reasons

1. Format
Format is set up so it flows orderly and set up with many visuals, so to help one better remember the concepts and points. This booked promoted better memorization for me

2. Content :
Content is very complete with detail and outlines areas of key importance. This allows one to understand both the "How-to" details, and operations of project management, while highlighting areas which are especially prone to be tested / asked in the exam...

3. Practice exercises
Exercises are set up very logical, and allow fundamental progression to occur. The explanations are the best and most complete which I have come across, and the practice exam section is questions just like the exam

I strongly recommend this book. It has helped me out tremendously and I believe it is the best material out there for PMP exam prep.

FYI - I also have the Cheat-Sheet,(PMP Quick Reference Guide) by the same author "Sohel Akhter" .... it is fantastic and a must as well. It outlines the most critical parts to know for the PMP exam and it is a great to help memorization.

An absolute value-add for a prospective PMP

This book is truly ‘the asset’ to help anyone clear the PMP exam, by focusing only on its contents – ‘end to end’, for one month. It does deliver all that it promises, it easies the PMP journey.
This book was my primary source of study for the PMP exam (beyond some sample questions on the internet). Now that I have cleared the PMP in my first attempt, I would recommend this book highly, as being the only source that is thoroughly focused in ensuring that it equips you with the right mix of contents, delivered in a clear concise format to pass the exam in the first attempt. The exam is tough and unconditionally demands the kind of focus that this book delivers. The sample questions in this book give a clear perspective of how the exam questions would be structured – this probably is the only source you would need if you want to get things right the first time.
Besides setting the exam perspective, it has many real world examples that would serve as high-quality reference material for actual project management.
I had attended the training course that the author of this book handled, in Dec 2013 and used his study materials. I got this book which the author recommended to me in Mar 2014 for the practice questions. I studied this book end to end and ensured that I solved all the sample questions including the 200 sample exam questions included at the end of this book. It was all totally worth it!

The Indept PMP Exam Prep Manual

Prior to purchasing this book, I read through Andy Crowe's "The PMP Exam". Although Andy's book have a lot of good information regarding the PMP exam, Sohel Akhter's book offers more information and details not only about what is required to pass the PMP exam but also how to be a Professional Project Manager. This these reasons, I highly recommend Akhter's Project Management Professional Exam prep. In addition, the questions at the end of each chapter are challenging. Happy reading fellow managers.
