Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, by Kathleen Norris

A beautiful meditation on life in the Great Plains from award-winning author and poet Kathleen Norris.

Kathleen Norris invites readers to experience rich moments of prayer and presence in Dakota, a timeless tribute to a place in the American landscape that is at once desolate and sublime, harsh and forgiving, steeped in history and myth. In thoughtful, discerning prose, she explores how we come to inhabit the world we see, and how that world also inhabits us. Her voice is a steady assurance that we can, and do, chart our spiritual geography wherever we go.

Amazon.com Review
After 20 years of living in the "Great American Outback," as Newsweek magazine once designated the Dakotas, poet Kathleen Norris (The Cloister Walk) came to understand the fascinating ways that people become metaphors for the land they inhabit. When trying to understand the polarizing contradictions that exist in the Dakotas between "hospitality and insularity, change and inertia, stability and instability.... between hope and despair, between open hearts and closed minds," Norris draws a map. "We are at the point of transition between east and west in the United States," she explains, "geographically and psychically isolated from either coast, and unlike either the Midwest or the desert west."

Like Terry Tempest Williams (Refuge), Norris understands how the boundary between inner and outer scenery begins to blur when one is fully present in the landscape of their lives. As a result, she offers the geography lesson we all longed for in school. This is a poetic, noble, and often funny (see her discussion on the foreign concept of tofu) tribute to Dakota, including its Native Americans, Benedictine monks, ministers and churchgoers, wind-weathered farmers, and all its plain folks who live such complicated and simple lives. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Nearly 20 years ago, poet Kathleen Norris and her husband moved from New York to the isolated town of Lemmon in northwestern South Dakota, home of her grandparents. Living there radically changed her sense of time and place, forcing her to come to terms with her heritage, her religious beliefs and the land. Norris learned to value the prairie landscape and to cope with the harsh climate. She found small-town life a mass of contradictions: generous hospitality mixed with suspicion of strangers, inertia and a sense of inferiority. One boon to her new life was a community of Benedictine monks; with them she recaptured her (Protestant) Christian faith and discovered inner peace. This is a fine portrait of the High Plains and its people as well as a very personal memoir of a spiritual awakening.

From Library Journal
The Dakotas, while thought to be God's country by some, are considered a forgotten land by others. With imagistic flair, poet Norris ( The Year of Common Things , Wayland Pr., 1988) brings alive the history and spirit of the area and its inhabitants. She writes that residing in a small town like Lemmon, North Dakota, can be both a burden and a blessing, giving us insight into her life there by sharing recollections and observations. Norris effectively transports readers into this world by describing her journey of self-discovery and spirituality. Hers is a very personal story, yet it is both philosophical and entertaining. Norris reminds us that beauty and a sense of belonging are only limited by an individual's perception. Recommended for most travel collections. Norris is an LJ reviewer.--Ed.

This is the best of Norris' works I have read
By A Customer
I had previously read two other books by Norris: The Cloister Walk and Amazing Grace:A Vocabulary of Faith. I had given copies of both to friends and family. To be honest I didn't expect Dakota to be any better than those two, but I was mistaken. Norris' descriptions of her corner of South Dakota were breathtaking and almost made me want move there. I share a similar faith journey to Norris'and I find her understanding (and lack of understanding)of God as she is learning to know him to be very believable and at times very moving. Norris has to be one of the best writers currently writing about Christianity. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a closer relationship with God, and also to anyone who appreciates good writing.

a beautiful, deliberate book of faith
By Joe Sherry
Kathleen Norris is the author of Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, and The Cloister Walk. She is a poet. Dakota was her first work of nonfiction/memoir. Having read both Amazing Grace and The Cloister Walk, I had an idea of what to expect from Norris's work. She writes deeply personal and deeply spiritual books. Dakota has the same type of feel to it, but the location and the subject is different.
Kathleen Norris's past lay in western South Dakota, but for twenty years she had abandoned both her faith as well has her history. She went to school in New York but decides to move back to Lemmon, SD with her husband. Her book is subtitled "A Spiritual Geography". She writes early on that geography comes from the words for earth and writing, and so knowing that this is a spiritual geography we immediately know that this is a spiritual discussion of the Dakotas, as well as also being about Norris herself.
Norris writes about small town life and small town church, and a semi-history of the town of Lemmon. Since most of the details are told in anecdote, it makes things easier to read. One thing that struck me was how she was comparing monastic life to small town faith and how much things tied together like that. The focus on monastic life and on monks is a theme and a topic that will run throughout the book as well as into her subsequent books. Kathleen Norris may not have a mainstream Christian faith, but she has a deep reverence and respect for the Christian tradition and faith, especially that which has come from the monasteries.
This is a slow moving, peaceful book. It is thoughtful, intelligent, and moving. It is filled to the brim with a steady faith in Christ and in some ways, it moves like time spent in a monastery. I don't know if this sounds like a recommendation, but it is meant to be. I found Dakota to be very interesting and along with Dakota, I would recommend Norris's later book: Amazing Grace.

One Of The Greatest Quiet Books
By Richard R. Carlton
Norris is quite amazing, having overcome the natural fault of looking at the world through her previous pre-conceptions...i.e., a New Yorker who just has to comment on how different real small town life is. She is one of the few who can actually convey the essence of a small town (and her credibility is strengthened by her fair mention of both pros and cons).
My Dad had an uncle who homesteaded in Lemon, SD (where Norris lives) and I spent most summers on my Mom's family's ranch on the James River. Norris helped me understand what all those years were really about.
The stark spirituality of her monastic experiences are powerful. This is why the book is not a slow read (as many have commented)....it is a quiet read.....and from that forgotten strength in our busy world, this book is a remarkable refuge.
Read this in quiet.....understand small town life on the starkly beautiful great northern plains......and become a better person for the time you give Norris' writing. I predict you will find another small piece to the puzzle of where you fit into the great scheme of things....whether it be your religious beliefs or your sense of history, geography, art, or self....it's in there and she will help you to reach it in her own quiet and mysterious way.

Excellent recipes
By C2
I love this cookbook. Every recipe I have tried has been excellent (and I've tried many). In fact, I made the light lemon bundt cake tonight - another hit. I read a few of the negative reviews and I have to say, I'm surprised. First of all, to the person who screwed up the chocolate chip cookie recipe, too bad for you because it is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe out there. In fact, my nonvegan friends and family members frequently request that I bake several batches and freeze them so they can get refills when I visit. I have yet to meet a single person who hasn't said it is the best chocolate chip cookie they've ever had. Someone just asked me today to bring some to an upcoming Easter party (where I will be the only vegan). Also, people claiming they could buy a regular cookbook and just exchange the animal products for veg products, go ahead. Who cares? That doesn't make this cookbook worse, it simply uses other ingredients. You're going to pay for a cookbook either way. I'm also not sure why people are implying that egg replacer is somehow "bad." It's basically potato starch - a totally neutral ingredient.

Nice resource for beginning vegan bakers, but nothing special
By GC
This book's strong points are also its weak points, depending on what your priorities are. As other reviewers have mentioned, the author generally makes simple substitutions from standard baking - usually margarine for butter and ener-g or tofu for eggs. The upside of this 'lowest common denominator' style of vegan baking is that it's very easy and inexpensive to find substitutes, and it won't alter your routine too much if you're used to standard baking. Still, it reminds me of a vegan cookbook that gives 'meat and potatoes' recipes with just tofu or seitan instead of the meat, in that it wears out its usefulness and gets boring pretty quickly. It helped me when I began baking vegan goodies, although I never really baked with eggs and dairy (I didn't know how to bake, period, before I bought this book to start learning). The sections that explain how to make substitutions and how leavening and binding agents work were helpful, but I imagine that other books or websites give similar information.

I consider this book a decent buy if you want to make sweets as close to their egg- and dairy-containing counterparts and possible, with minimum substitution; this is especially handy if you're baking to share with people who might be leery of chocolate cake made with zucchini or something such. It also doesn't ask you to use chickpea and spelt flour and other expensive, hard-to-find ingredients that are so annoyingly common in vegan recipes (there is an over-reliance on 'pure maple syrup', however; does she not know how prohibitively expensive that stuff is? I use agave instead). If you really want to save your money, I recommend using vegan recipe websites and blogs rather than buying this book. Great ones to try include the Post-Punk Kitchen, Vegan Dad, Fat-Free Vegan Kitchen, and No-Meat Athlete; they don't have the same baking substitution tutorials as a cookbook (at least, not that I know of), but they generally have great basic recipes as well as more varied, innovative ones...plus, it's free and the commenters often give nifty tips and tricks. For the record, this author publishes recipes on her website too, but you have to pay for a subscription to access them. I don't necessarily fault her for it (she has to pay the bills too), but I'd rather try out the recipes that authors offer for free...then buy their cookbooks if they're good. Thank you, Isa Chandra Moskowitz!

This a fantastic cookbook! Colleen Patrick-Goudreau cover all the basics
By Bella Veronica
This a fantastic cookbook! Colleen Patrick-Goudreau cover all the basics, clears up any questions or confusion about how to bake, vegan. The cookbook has a great variety of recipes, while still being true to the most familiar, and popular baked goods we all grew up with. There aren't any strange configurations of ingredients, or methods to getting to a finished product. The author, makes it easy. The book itself is a great size, and being a softcover, very easy to use. I just love it.

The Operas of Verdi: Volume 1: From Oberto to Rigoletto, by Julian Budden

Marked by extraordinary research and enhanced by hundreds of musical illustrations, this monumental study follows the development of Verdi's oeuvre from his earliest opera Oberto to his final work, Falstaff. In writing the first edition of this classic work--which appeared to great acclaim in 1973--Julian Budden mined the vast resources of European archives to provide a groundbreaking interpretation of Verdi's work, and along the way discovered much new material, including an unpublished additional aria for I Due Foscari. Now available in a revised edition, The Operas of Verdi is now brought up to date in light of the most recent scholarship, making it more useful and entertaining than ever.
Volume 1 traces the organic growth and development of the composer's style from 1839 to 1851--from Oberto to Rigoletto--and examines each opera in detail, offering a full account of its dramatic and historical origins as well as a brief critical evaluation. More than 350 musical examples make the significance of these early operas to Verdi's developing style especially clear.
In the second volume, Budden covers those operas written during the decadence of the post-Rossini period. During this time Verdi, having exhausted the simple lyricism found in such works as Il Trovatore and La Traviata, found new life as he directly confronted the masters of the Paris opera with his Les VĂªpres Siciliennes. The new scale and variety of musical thought that can be sensed in the Italian operas which followed is shown here to culminate in La Forza del Destino.
The third and final volume of the study covers the quarter century which saw grand opera on the Parisian model established throughout Italy, and the spread of cosmopolitan influences that convinced many that Italian music was losing its identity. Verdi produced his four last and greatest operas during this time--Don Carlos, Aida, Otello, and Falstaff--operas which helped inaugurate "versimo," in which a new, recognizably Italian idiom was realized.
These three volumes cover every aspect of Verdi's rich and varied operatic achievement. Every lover of opera in particular and music in general will want a set in their library.

Amazon.com Review
The three volumes of studies of Verdi's operas by Julian Budden are rightly classics of the genre. This is owing to their scope of information on the genesis, circumstances, variants, and specifics of the operas themselves--certainly the fullest description these works have ever been given--as well as to the wealth of surrounding information about the composer, his life, his friends, and his times. It is a measure of the excellence of Budden's achievement that this cornucopia of information is surveyed in very readable prose--readers get a picture of each work within its context. Budden's knowledge of 19th-century opera--both in Italy and in France--is wide-ranging, and he is able to place Verdi and his works in comparison with those of Donizetti, Pacini, Mercadante, and Meyerbeer. He discusses how the great operatic genius emerged from the background of early-19th-century opera and how Verdi's own early, uneven works blossomed into the glory of his later ones. Budden, thankfully, is not a hagiographer, and he recognizes Verdi's faults as well as his strengths, but few--if any--writers have managed to demonstrate how Verdi both blended in with his musical surroundings and stood out from them. These studies, with all their richness, are a good source of information about a host of lesser composers of the time. Budden includes many musical examples to highlight his writing in this, a work of scholarship of the highest order. --Patrick J. Smith

Review
'Where on earth did Verdians turn before Budden? When the first volume of his chronological study of the complete 31 operas appeared in 1973, it was already clear this could prove the standard work...With Verdi productions proliferating in the run-up to the centenary of his death in 2001, this great study grows ever more necessary.' A must for Verdi fans
By Brian Lowery
I finally ordered this book, and I love it. I wish I had got it years ago. Covers the history, the music, and story of each Verdi opera up to Rigoletto. After reading about one of the operas, you will find that you enjoy it more the next time you hear it. If you like Verdi, you should have this book in your library!

indispensable for Verdians; a major and accessible work of scholarship
By Stanley Crowe
Like another review here, this one really relates to all three volumes of Budden's traversal of Verdi's operas. I can't think of many books in which works of art (whether literature, painting, drama, or music) are as effectively contextualized as they are here. The context is historical in several senses: it is attentive to the particular political and social circumstances in which Verdi's operas were created, but it's attentive too to the "politics" of the Italian (and at times Parisian) opera world in which Verdi , Donizetti, Bellini, Rossini, and a host of minor figures belonged. We hear about managers, impresarios, singers, opera houses, and of course librettists, and Budden quotes tellingly from Verdi's ample correspondence with all these groups. We get a sense, therefore, of Verdi, not only as composer, but as businessman and collaborator, and we get a sense of his energy and personality and decisiveness. Its an attractive portrait: a touchy, principled, ambitious, and , of course, highly gifted man. But Budden gives us more: the musical context is also made clear in excellent general essays at the beginnings of the first two volumes, before Budden embarks on individual chapters on every opera. In the individual chapters, we get accounts of the genesis of the operas, plenty of information on their sources (often with ample quotation), including descriptions of how the opera plots modify the plots of the originals, and some account of the early reception and early performance history of each opera. Then there's the musical analysis itself, and the text is replete with musical examples. Budden has a fine sense of where Verdi's originality is in evidence, even in the early operas, and while these early operas get extensive treatment in their individual chapters, the "great" operas get correspondingly fuller treatment and analysis. Even if your musical knowledge is limited (as mine is), you will find Budden's three volumes fascinating and instructive -- and, as important as anything, written with clarity, grace, and humor. This is a major work of criticism and scholarship.

A Terrific Achievement
By New Yorker
I'm reviewing the first volume, but this is really about all three volumes. After a
general introduction situating Verdi in the Italian opera structure of his time, the
author present a separate chapter on each title, first giving the background of the
project and then analyzing the action scene by scene, with plenty of musical examples.
Instead of following a recording with the libretto, you can follow it using Budden's
precis, for much enlightenment on how Verdi created music drama. It's really an
amazingly detailed excursion. Had you heard about Budden's plans before he actually
started writing, you might guess that no one life is long enough to allow an author to
lay out so much detail, so much thought and insight. There are many great books. But
this one is astonishing.

Great for Horse Anatomy
By BNew
I am a first year veterinary student and I was told that purchasing this book was a must for veterinary school; and I am not disappointed in my purchase! This book is great for looking into and describing anatomy. If you're a visual learner the pictures will be great for you. The descriptions can be a bit confusing but nothing asking a professor or just dissecting the text can't solve.
One thing that kind of bugged me, even though it is not a big deal, was that the pages that the index refers you too are wrong sometimes. They are only about a page off and it has only happened a couple times but that was slightly confusing for me.
Overall a great book, kind of pricey but well worth it, especially if you are interested in studying equine medicine this will be a great resource for you

Love this book
By Maggie Lees
Honestly one of the best anatomy books I have come across. Used it throughout my anatomy course as a first year veterinary student, and I would definitely purchase again. Clear, beautiful photos that were nicely labeled. Didn't have every last detail that some professors will want you to know, but will be an excellent reference for clinics and practice later in life. Definitely worth the investment.
