Beautiful and useful book.

Bobbi Brown isn't about makeup trickery and techniques designed to alter the shape of a feature or make an average woman look like a drag Marilyn Monroe. If you are looking for this kind of book--as I suspect some of the other reviewers were--look elsewhere. What she is about is teaching a woman to look and feel her best, and this book does an excellent job of showing each and every step, in a way that a novice can understand and a pro can appreciate. Not everyone may feel they need this kind of instruction...but then why read a book called "Makeup Manual" if you already know it all?

Unlike her other books, which focus quite a bit on how health and lifestyle affect beauty, Bobbi's Makeup Manual really is dedicated to makeup artistry. A beginning makeup artist will find the detailed instructions on dramatic smoky eyes, false eyelash application, and how to work on a photo shoot especially useful. Bobbi also delves into extreme color, editorial looks, makeup as art, and tribal and geisha looks, all of which are territory uncovered in her previous books.

To summarize, if you appreciate Bobbi Brown's aesthetic, you will enjoy this book. If you want to know how to create basic and dramatic looks in a way that is pretty and modern, you will love this book. If you are a new makeup artist, you need this book. If you want to know how to transform Andy Rooney into Audrey Hepburn with lipstick, glitter, and seventeen concealers, you will hate this book. If you already know it all...write your own book. Clear and Concise, Great Advice and Information

The subtitle of BOBBI BROWN MAKEUP MANUAL indicates it is for the beginner to pro and I'm in the beginner category. All I'm interested in is doing my own makeup well. As a user of Bobbi Brown makeup for over ten years, I wanted to read this book to see what I could improve as formerly I was just applying the makeup as instructed by the BB counter saleswoman instructed me. I didn't know why I was doing what I was doing until I read this book.

The bulk of the book (the first 138 pages) is designed to be used by both individual women for their own makeup and can also be used by professionals. After giving some brief opinions and recommendations on which products or product types to use on various skin types or for different purposes (such as when to use crème blush versus powder blush for example), clear directions for applying the makeup properly are given in brief text along with full step by step directions. Important to note is that all skin colors and different ethnicities are included. Special techniques for Asians are given such as handling eye makeup. I was happily surprised to see special advice given for women with freckles, the advice is to not cover them up completely but to use special makeup effects that allow them to show through. Also covered is how to handle makeup with skin conditions such as rosacea and others.

A section at the beginning gives information about brush selection, the importance of proper brush maintenance, and the reasons to use high quality brushes. Advice on compiling makeup kits is included, specifically, what items to buy and how to organize them for different purposes (travel, everyday use, and so forth).

I was impressed also with the section about eyebrows and eyelashes. Included is information about the benefits of and best ways to shape the eyebrows and when eyebrow makeup should be used. Directions for penciling in eyebrows for women with sparse eyebrows or who are currently undergoing chemotherapy is useful too. The proper way to apply mascara, how to use an eyelash curler and even how to apply false eyelashes correctly is included.

What struck me the most about this book is that it gives just enough information to be thorough but not too much so as to bog down or intimidate the reader. The photographed stepped out directions are done well. It is easy to find the makeup technique or effect you want to achieve to use the book's directions when needed. When to use various effects is explained, such as daytime makeup and then touching it up for evening. Makeup for weddings and other formal events is also covered.

The last 80 pages are dedicated to professional makeup artists or those striving to become professional makeup artists. Those pages cover a range of topics from special makeup procedures to use on models in dramatic photo shoots to job basics such as career options, marketing oneself and booking work.

A short resources section is included at the end.

I read the book cover to cover and learned some things about makeup and makeup application that I never knew. I finally know how to pick the right shade of lipstick and foundation, and how to bring up the various levels of makeup for a more dramatic effect if desired. Now I will use the book as a reference guide for applying makeup. The book can easily be referenced for step by step directions.

Again from the perspective of an amateur, I loved this book. It breaks down a lot of information into easy to understand manner. I like the makeup style used by Bobbi Brown, of how natural her everyday makeup look is and the fact that Brown seeks to enhance a woman's unique features rather than putting the makeup first and the women second. Unlike other makeup companies, Brown does not just churn out trendy colors each season and expect women to buy and use them as they are `in style' at the moment. Brown wants women to look their best, to look natural but an "enhanced" natural. Brown's makeup recommendations for evening and special occasions is elegant and beautiful, the makeup is not overpowering.

Late Bloomer

Most women learn how to apply makeup in their early teens and then continue learning new things as they mature. By the time they are fifty-seven (like I am) they pretty well know their faces, their coloring and what works and what doesn't. But suppose you started life at age fifty-seven, where would all of your experience be? This happened to me. I transitioned from male to female, and there I was with, pardon this, my face hanging out and nothing to put on it! For someone in my position, Bobbi Brown's Makeup Manual has been nothing less than a Godsend! I have learned more in the past few months from this book than I ever dreamed possible and instead of looking foolish with bad makeup and no knowledge of how to use it, I have not only learned how to apply it properly and what works for me, but have also gained a great deal of confidence just because I know what to do now. Thank You Bobbi, from the bottom of my heart. This book is just THAT GOOD!

From the reform of public education to the symbolism surrounding grand public ceremonies in honor of long-dead poets, Marashi shows how the state invented and promoted key features of the common culture binding state and society. The ideological thrust of that century would become the source of dramatic contestation in the late twentieth century.

Rituals of the Modern State

An interesting case study but not very exciting book, written originally as a PhD thesis. The gist is that Iran followed the same pattern into modernity and nationalism that other nations did and only lagged a behind for a bit, ostensibly because Shah Naser al-Din delayed taking the same European tour that other national leaders did until 1873. The inspiration for most was Baron Haussmann's redesigned Paris, the wide boulevards, glassed in shops which, along with London and its Crystal Palace, created a grand sense of spectacle and public ceremony. It's a pattern well described in Walter Benjamin's Paris The Arcades Project, and widely emulated elsewhere in Cairo, Berlin, Istanbul, Baghdad, the far east and in the Americas. Marashi delights over how much Naser al-Din observed and learned about the effect of an engineered public space on public participation and the imagination.

Marashi's interest is in general legitimization of dynastic power as Iranian society moved into a shared modernity. One aspect of this was the widespread performance of the Ta'ziyeh, a Shiite passion play commemorating the martrydom of Imam Hoseyn during the month of Moharram, usually performed in public spaces or smaller theatres. To this end on a grander scale, the Takyeh Dowlat amphitheatre was built in the 1870s, seating some 20,000 was built, and attending a performance was considered to be a highly desirable social act at all levels of Qajar society.

A second pattern of modernization was the invocation of ancient traditions as idealized seed elements of a nationalist present. Inheriting an ancient culture was often used to validate the historicity of the modern nation-state. One intriguing relationship was the largely Zoroastrian-Parsi community of Bombay which, was regarded as a preserved model of ancient Iran. Another source Iranian intellectuals drew on the were writings of European orientalists who through their research and archeological studies knew more about these earlier periods than did most Iranians, for example their translation of Herodotus' History of the Persians. The Indo-European hypothesis of linguistic genealogy and ancient migration proved useful in establishing Iran's historic position in the pantheon of nations, while differentiating it from Semitic-Arabic culture.

The final pattern is the growth of public education. As happened elsewhere, French and British military advisers were brought in to train, educate and modernize the army and French Lazarists and American Presbyterian missionaries created schools for the education of Christian children along with the France based Alliance Israelite Universelle bringing modern western style education to the Jews, all of which tied in nicely to the nationalist project which required a literate and numerate bureaucratic elite. Reza Shah Pahlavi ascended the Peacock Throne in 1926. Under his rule the missionary aspect of the schools was curtailed, and by 1939 the schools were nationalized and taken over. The Ministry of Education was charged with creating a universal Iranian education and the public sphere poets such as Omar Kayyam and Ferdowsi's 1000 year epic poem the The Shahnameh was given special prominence, as was the visit of Bengali sage and Nobel Prize winning poet Rabindranath Tagore in 1932.

The account ends on the cusp of WW II, just before things start to get really interesting. A reasonable backgrounder to Iranian society and the politics of the State of the day. The audience would be almost entirely academic.

A REFORMED PASTOR EXPLAINS THIS VIEWPOINT

Kim Riddlebarger is senior pastor of Christ Reformed Church in Anaheim, and visiting professor at Westminster Seminary California. He is also cohost of the 'White Horse Inn' radio program, and author of The Man of Sin: Uncovering the Truth about the Antichrist. He wrote in the Introduction to this 2003 book, "My purpose is to set forth the historic Protestant understanding of the millennial age. This position is commonly known as amillennialism and is centered in the present reign of Jesus Christ. Amillennialism is grounded in redemptive history, the historical acts of God as they unfold in the Bible to provide for the salvation of his people. Although it is commonly argued that amillennarians do not believe in any millennial age... this is not the case. Amillenarians believe that the millennium is a present reality... not a future hope." (Pg. 11)

He explains, "Amillennialism was not recognized as a distinct position until around the turn of the twentieth century. Until then, amillenarians called themselves postmillennial because they believed Christ would come back after the millennial age, but they were different from traditional postmillenarians in that they did not believe in an earthy millennial age yet to dawn." (Pg. 31)

He observes, "Notice that all these events (the judgment of both believers and unbelievers, the day of the Lord, the last trumpet, and the restoration of all things) occur at the same time---at the return of Christ. Nothing was said or implied to lead us to believe that Christ returns to set up his kingdom or that a one-thousand-year gap lies between his second advent and the final judgment. Based on the clear biblical texts that we have seen above, no such lengthy intervals are found in any passage individually or collectively. The premillennialists read these lengthy intervals into the biblical text." (Pg. 93) He adds, "we can have no doubts that the last day, the last trumpet, the day of the Lord, raising of the dead, and the judgement of people will be concomitant events." (Pg. 137)

He suggests, "To look for a rebuilt temple, to Jesus sitting on David's throne in an earthly Jerusalem, to babies being born and daily life continuing after Christ's return empties the kingdom and the 'age to come' of its eternal character." (Pg. 110) He argues, "One of the most telling criticisms [of premillennialism] is the language used by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18... Three times in the passage, Paul used terminology to convey the idea that Jesus Christ's return to earth will be accompanied by divine announcements which are clearly universal in nature.... The whole thrust of the three-fold announcement is that God Himself will proclaim the return of Jesus Christ so loudly that the whole world will hear. Not only so, but the world will also witness the subsequent catching away of believers (v. 17). If dispensationalists are correct in saying that this coming is a secret, then only believers will hear the divine declaration." (Pg. 143)

He points out, "Revelation 20:7-10 raises a number of problems for all millenarians... given that the satanically inspired revolt of the nations John described occurs after the general resurrection and when there cannot be people in natural bodies on earth nor can there be people on earth who have not passed through the final judgment. Who are these people who revolt against Christ? Who are these who are consumed by fire? Are these people in unresurrected bodies? If so, where do they come from? This is especially problematic since Jesus himself taught that in the age to come his people will all be children of the resurrection." (Pg. 232)

A Masterful Case

Since its appearance in 2003, I've regarded Kim Riddlebarger's "A Case for Amillennialism" as the most thorough, well-written and compelling book in favor of the view that Christ's return will occur at the very time of the bodily resurrection, final judgment and cosmic renewal. Now, in this 2013 expanded edition, with two new chapters, plus the addition of both a subject index and a scripture index, this volume will prove even more useful to those who wish to explore what the Bible says about the end times. It takes its stand with the works of Anthony Hoekema, Cornelis Venema and Sam Storms as the cream of the crop in matters of things to come.

A Compelling Case for Amillennialism

Kim Riddlebarger's book, A Case for Amillennialism, is a compelling case for Amillennialism. It is not, however, a convincing case. If you are coming to this book to convince you that Amillennialism is the true eschatology, you will not find it here. You will only find it in the Bible. But Riddlebarger does make a compelling case for it. Unfortunately though, much of this book seemed to me to be a polemic against Dispensationalism/Pre-Trib. Premillennialism- indeed, almost exclusively! It was striking how little he seemed to interact with Historic Premillennialism or (more understandably) Postmillennialism. I will give him this: his critique of Dispensationalism is very much needed in modern evangelicalism's thought/theology, as it is often assumed to be the only eschatological stance. However, I would have preferred him to spend more time on Historic Premillennialism than he did. I digress...
His arguments are easy to understand and his writing style is easy to follow. He defines his terms at the very beginning (as any good writer should) and so makes it (at least mostly) easy for even someone new to theology to understand. However, I'm quite sure it would be quite difficult to follow what he is saying if one does not have a decent knowledge of Scripture. What I mean is this: if you don't read the Bible, this book will not be very beneficial to you. You will not be able to see how he is right or where he is wrong. That being said, I think that this book does have much to offer to he who wants to understand an eschatology that actually makes a bit of sense or holds together when held up in the light of Scripture. I think Riddlebarger does a very good job of describing and making a compelling case for Amillennialism.
Read it all and read it well.

Good introduction to the topic

An excellent introductory text.. While it won't replace formal, traditional, approaches to the subject this is near perfect if you're looking for a quick overview covering key algorithms, Big-O notation and its implications for various approaches, low-math and minimal jargon, and a bit of fun. The illustrations and diagrams are hand-drawn and well-suited to the content style (as well as being clear and simple to follow). If you're looking for a formal introduction or an academic approach this isn't the book for you but it gets the job done as a solid introductory text. I try to keep up with books on a variety of CS/Dev subjects both for myself and to check out new texts for others; this one I'll be highly recommending.

Let's hope the author keeps this up with a "Grokking" series covering other CS/Dev topics.

BTW, the book includes an insert with a code for a free e-book version. I overlooked that on first reading; it's a nice addition if you want to add a portable electronic copy for quick reference.

Visual learners start here

I'm not big on rating things, but I had to for this amazing book. This is by far the best introduction to algorithms out there, especially if you have not encountered them before. If you're a dev new to coding from some other field and lack a CS background, start here. If you are a VISUAL LEARNER, start here. If you like light, easy text to get acquainted with an idea, start here. If you want to learn the basics and learn them well, start here. After you read this book you'll be ready for the more dense ones.

Light-hearted and enjoyable intro to a tough topic - but watch out for code bugs!

Very enjoyable, light-hearted overview of a central (and often very dry) topic in computer science. The author's enthusiasm shines through, and helps to motivate the reader as well. I believe there are some minor bugs here and there, however, in the Python source code. For example, in the binary search source code early in the book (on page 9, I believe), the calculation of the variable "mid" neglects to divide the sum of "high" and "low" by 2 - readers would do well to keep their eyes open to this when actually entering the source code into their machines! Overall, though, a great way to get an introduction to an important topic.

It's a textbook, what do you expect?

Solid content, spotty form

The content is comprehensive, timely, and accurate (I say this from the perspectives of both a former HRM executive and a university professor). In fact, a professor could probably use this textbook to teach an employee staffing course even to students who have not had an introductory HRM course as a prerequisite. Summary tables and figures in each chapter are very useful for focusing classroom discussion.

The proofreading and copy editing were apparently poor for this textbook, so users have to overlook misused pronouns, a few badly broken sentences, many infinitives split with unnecessary adverbs, and so on. Here's an example on page 257: "Personality tests are easy to use, but applicants often react to poorly to them" (what's an extra "to" here and there?). The one that convinced me Pearson and the authors used interns and undergraduates to write some of the book is this gem on page 334: "Becoming a doctor is often sequential, whereas becoming a manger is often random." Becoming a manger--a hay box for cattle and horses--sounds painful. Granted, undergraduate and MBA students have written about mangers for years and found such sloppy spelling (and the sloppy proofreading that permits it to stay in text) is wrong, but Pearson permits this stuff in its textbooks now.
