Enjoyed it

This book gave me a basic knowledge and understanding of what to look for when choosing an investment. I already had an understanding of what I wanted to accomplish, but this book gave me the tools to dig deeper into the kind of information that will allow me to make an educated decision with my investing strategy. Great read.

I must admit that finances was never a subject that interested me. I always found the subject boring and too complicated, never really took the time to read about it.

Not long ago I had to make some investments choices. Since my background on the subject was limited, it was a bit harsh to make the proper decisions.

This book gladly helped me understand the process of stock market and gave me good references for the future. It is explained keeping in mind that the reader is, like me, a beginner in the field or does not want to read big and painful bbooks... And at the end you find yourself more enlightened on the subject instead of being lost in too much information that you don't know where to begin with....

The author gives some tips & resources, and you get to choose whatever is relevant for your situation.

Now I know what to look for, where to look for and where to invest; I will not go blind in this field anymore!

This book helps because it gets directly to the nitty gritty of understanding how to invest and what methods suit different types of people.

sharp stuff

The big fear with such books is 1) that it'll be quack anecdote stuff, or 2) that it'll be so obvious anyone with a high school psych book would know it already. This book is neither. Well-researched, cited, and both insightful and funny, it's simply a fun read. Also informative. Do recommend.

Great read if you are interested in knowing why people behave the way they do...

Nick has put together a true masterpiece with this book. I have tried to make it through Cialdini, etc. before, but never found the writing style that engaging. In this book, Nick takes you through all the methods and gives scientific data to back it up. I have rarely read a book that does this without either...A. Putting me to sleep....or B. Giving me no practical way to apply the information whatsoever.
This is not the case with this book. You get the knowledge and how to apply it in the real world and the writing is engaging. I can't believe this book was in my Kindle for 4 months before I decided to read it! Glad I circled back around to it :-)

Much like a debut album, it will be hard for him to top this effort, but I look forward to further works from him if he chooses to publish more.

An Enlightening Glimpse Inside the Human Mind

At just over 200 pages, Methods of Persuasion offers an intelligent, witty, and enlightening glimpse inside the human mind. Nick shows how most of our daily actions are often controlled by principles outside of our conscious awareness, and he does a great job of describing the scientific research in a fascinating and entertaining way.

Everything that he explains is also practical. I found myself jotting down idea after idea (and I usually don’t take notes while reading). Although many of the examples relate to marketing and advertising, he explains many different scenarios where the principles can be used.

My favorite part of the book is that it describes a step-by-step process. Similar books that I’ve read on the subject only explain a list of techniques, so it’s sometimes difficult to know when to use them. This is the first book I’ve read that actually outlines a clear and logical sequence of steps to persuade someone.

With the money he makes burning down houses as part of an insurance scam, Julio Santana, 29, a reluctant professional arsonist in Spanish Harlem, strives to make a better life for himself and his parents in this heart-on-its-sleeve novel of urban Latino life by Quiñonez, author of the critically acclaimed Bodega Dreams (2000). Despite his ambitions to make good—he's also in night school and working an above-board demolition job—Julio is wary of the gradual gentrification of his beloved neighborhood, which takes a personal turn when white girl Helen moves in downstairs. Her swings from condescension to belligerence are rather jarring (and not entirely credible), but Julio falls for her and embarks on a doomed relationship. Meanwhile, his old friend Maritza is running a church on the ground floor of his building, which she uses as a front for anti-AIDS crusading and shady immigration dealings. Erratic plotting jolts the reader from one neighborhood drama to the next, as Julio wrestles with questions of identity and ethics. But when he's blackmailed by his boss into doing one last arson job, a plot twist lets him (and Quiñonez) take the easy way out. Quiñonez has a comfortable familiarity with his turf and the catchy Spanglish most of his characters speak, but he tackles too much in this sometimes preachy, sketchy novel.

Better than his first novel, but...

There is something simultaneously appealing and frustrating about Ernesto Quinonez's second novel, a marked improvement over his highly-flawed debut, Bodega Dreams, but in the end, still something of a disappointment. This time, the problem lies in his biting off more than he can chew with too many subplots rolling around what is essentially one man's coming-of-age story at its heart.

He's inexplicably combined the systematic burning of Spanish Harlem, insurance fraud, organized crime, gentrification, Santeria, pseudo-socialism, illegal citizenship papers, a shady government agent and a few other random nuggets into a muddle-headed plot that rests precariously, and unsuccessfully, on a straight-out-of-Hollywood interracial romance...and frankly, he's just not up to the task. When the cliches aren't jumping off the page at the reader, the heavy-handed didacticism is smacking them in the face.

His protagonist, Julio Santana, is a philosophizing arsonist yearning for the old days while trying to turn his life around after the proverbial "last job." Almost every other character is either an archetype or a stereotype, none ever fully coming to life beyond the "issue" Quinonez has chosen them to represent. After some hit-or-miss character and plot 'development' in the first two-thirds of the book, the hasty climax gets sloppy and, just like in Bodega Dreams, includes an out-of-left-field occurrence to wrap things up. The too-convenient epilogue only makes matters worse.

That said, Quinonez is no hack and with a less ambitious plot that focused more on the characters he obviously had a connection to, especially the engaging babalawo Papelito, he could have had something really special here. Personally, I could see a viable sequel springing from this effort, focusing only on Julio's journey to his Asiento, his strained relationship with his parents and a fleshed-out romance with Helen and the issues that arise from it. The first two things represent the strongest aspects of Chango's Fire, while the latter's potential got buried in melodrama.

Another new author to keep track of

Good opening on the subject of arson in the Puerto Rican 'hood in simple style fitting the Puerto Rican narrator, Julio. About two thirds through it seemed to get tangled and the writing style seemed to me uneven and choppy - I was thinking of downrating to 3 stars. However, the author pulled everything back together for a nice ending and the rating went back up. Except for that section, which seemed to need more editing, it is basically a well-written socialogical novel with interesting array of characters: atheist woman do-gooder preacher, retarded friend, loving ex-musician father and firey funny mother, naive perky white girlfriend, undercover INS agent, homosexual voodoo priest/hero, etc. All in all, quite entertaining, but not a comedy - serious stuff. Interesting information about slum clearance by arson (everyone benefits except the insurance company stock holders and the tenents), and about the little known religion of Santeria ("way of the Saints"). I liked it well enough to think about reading his first book, Bodega Dreams, and definitely will keep a lookout for Mr. Quinonez' next novel.

Great Book!

I purchased the book for a Latin Literature class I am currently taking, it was an assigned book. The book is an easy read (I thought a little too simple for the class I am in) but, it really brings to life the community that Spanish Harlem was and is currently changing to. My family migrated to Spanish Harlem in the 40s and we all have lived here since than and Quinonez's depiction is pretty spot on. I am an instant fan and plan on picking up his other book, Bodega Dreams once all my reading is done for the semester.

David Makofske has over ten years experience as a software engineer and consultant, with an emphasis on IP network and web development. He received his Masters degree in computer science from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and is currently a senior solutions architect at Akamai Technologies.
Michael J. Donahoo teaches networking to undergraduate and graduate students at Baylor University, where he is an assistant professor. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Ken Calvert has been doing networking research since 1987, and teaching since 1991. He holds degrees from MIT, Stanford, and the University of Texas at Austin.

About the Author

A good practical manual

This book teaches TCP Socket programming using C# in a very efficient step-by-step manner.

Unlike many other books on .NET that I have, this one does not just give you code samples and leave you to scratch your head trying to figure out what's going on there. Instead, it analyzes all code samples line-by-line, leaving you virtually no questions to ask.

I gave this book 4 stars only because I was particularly interested in using multithreading with sockets for the project I'm working on, and this book's chapter on threading is surprisingly weak.

Other than that, it's a great manual to start with if you need to learn how to write socket apps in .NET.

Brilliant!

This book delivers a good understanding of sockets. I have read one or two other books regarding the subject. The thing I like about this one is A) the whole book is dedicated to it. B) Its explanations are probably the best I have read regarding any topic in programming. Remember first starting C++, and the first chapters of the book taught you how to add integers? You kind of sit there saying "Yeah, Yeah, get on with the hard stuff". As a total compliment: That is how this books makes you feel about sockets! The explanations and examples almost make it impossible to believe it is really that simple.

The Perfect Book With Perfect Examples

I loved this book!

I bought this book not knowing anything about sockets. All I knew was that I had to use them for my next project. I bought this book, and within 2 weeks time had developed a full-scale proof-of-concept, distributed, client-server type application communicating over TCP/IP and using UDP for multicasting.

The examples are concise and practical, including examples of data framing/parsing and how to deal with different wire formats (big/little endian).

This book is a must-have for any serious C# programmer.

Best book for beginning Core Data coders

This is the best book for beginning Core Data users I have discovered, and I highly recommend it.

I originally purchased Zarra's (probably) excellent book, but found it unhelpful at my level, as the project it used was quite elaborate, and obscured the workings of Core Data so much I could not figure out how to apply it to my apps. (I have a number of apps for sale, using SQLite directly, as I found Core Data code verbose and off-putting)

I found it after using Tim's terrific Staff Manager tutorial on Core Data, which is even simpler, and is a recommended prequel. I initially found the book disappointing, as it focused on another overly elaborate example, Grocery Dude. What is it with experts? Apple and all tend to use too elaborate examples rather than simple ones that are easier to understand. I've yet to see a truly simple example used (other than Staff Manager).

However, Tim includes in chapter 15 a great exercise that shows you how to use his inspired coredatehelper code to build core data into an existing app. Fabulous! I don't understand why Apple doesn't provide such an API. This book is worth many times the price just for this excellent code (caveat: it is not yet well commented, that would be an improvement). It basically provides a well-designed singleton class that is very, very helpful.

Using coredatahelper and the other tools provided, I was able to fairly quickly get core data working in an app, for the first time. Excellent! Zarra did not get me there, nor was the very good Stanford course CS193p adequate. It was a little too general.

The other very useful code in here is the 'backup to dropbox.com' tools. That works well, and is very useful.

Thanks to Tim for sharing this with the coding community. Buy this book, it's worth every penny.

Breathtaking in its simplicity!

After struggling through Core Data (2nd Edition) from Pragmatic Bookshelf this new book is a breath of fresh air. What's good about this one is that it actually tells you what to do, rather than describing method calls interspersed with great dollops of confusing terms that aren't explained very well. The sample code is actually well organised by chapter, too, unlike the confusing zip file from Prag Prog, which contains complete samples, and not starter projects into which the reader would add relevant lines from the book (which it doesn't do because it's not a step-by-step introduction to Core Data, unfortunately).

Tim Roadley quotes Albert Einstein in the first chapter thus: "If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough." After reading this I'm left wondering if Marcus S. Zarra (author of the other book which I regret purchasing not long after it came out) knows Core Data, whose book comes across more like a reference work to be checked occasionally to confirm something that you already know and need to brush up on!

So, I am extremely grateful for this book and having completed chapter 1, I can safely say that if you are an SQL old-timer like me and have never touched Core Data in your life (and perhaps might be reasonably new to Objective-C, like me), then this book is a must have. If you've used Core Data before and perhaps need a touch up, you may cope well with the Prag Prog book, but this one is so much better organised that it speaks for itself.

I've been a programmer for nearly 20-years now (wow, has it really been that long?) and have read hundreds of books covering languages, APIs, IDEs, frameworks, patterns, OOA/OOD/OOP, and raising farm animals... and I've got to say this is one of the best organized, best written, and best edited I've read - EVER.

Easy to understand, with clear, concise examples. Few pieces of errata (someone took their time checking both the text and the code for consistency). Great, USEFUL screen caps that actually show what the author is referring to, and easy to follow directions.

Unlike most books that give you pages of code to copy with no explanation of purpose, pattern, or thought, Tim covers the concept, the why and how and then walks you through the code implementation one class and method at a time.

About the Author
Richard E. Jones has published more than 100 research papers in his field and has received the NIH Research Career Development Award for his research efforts in the study of reproductive biology and endocrinology. In 1990 he received the Student Organization for Alumni Relations Teaching Recognition Award for his teaching of an annual undergraduate course, Human Reproductive Biology, and a course on human anatomy. Dr. Jones obtained his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He is now Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where his research interests include reproductive biology as well as reproductive endocrinology.

Kristin H. Lopez teaches human reproductive biology through the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado-Boulder. With a background in comparative reproduction and endocrinology, she is an editor of the fi ve-volume work Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates (Academic Press, 2011). Her ongoing work with Colorado Diversity Initiative promotes increased access to higher education of underrepresented students in STEM.
