easy to play

I got this for my 13 yr old daughter so we could sit at our piano and play these wonderful songs together. Sometimes I switch over to guitar while we are playing. She enjoys the songs and she also enjoys playing them.

I want to devour "The Light of the World" over and over again.

Ellen Simpson creates a world out of vivid sensory language that captures the reader and thrusts them into Eva's life. The words flow naturally throughout the pages, and nothing is forced. I couldn't even put it down to eat; I had to devour everything about "The Light of the World"!

The characters, such as Eva, that Simpson has created have organic chemistry with one another that allows readers to fall wholeheartedly without fear into their world of mystery, of shadows, of the battle of good versus evil. Readers will root for Eva, Liv, and Al as they delve deeper into the mystery catalyzed by Eva's grandmother Mary's passing (at over a hundred years old!). As Mary's teenage years unfold through the pages of the journals, Eva's own life will change in ways most unexpected. Parallels will be drawn in thin arcs of light between the past and the present, beckoning readers to continue at their own risk.

If you're like me and into eloquently written, queer-normative fiction that combines the fantastic and the realism of the world around us while simultaneously giving readers a romantic side plot and a main character that isn't neurotypical that doesn't detract from the wonderfully addictive driving force behind the main story line, then this is the book for you.

I feel like I need to read this book again and again ...

The Light of the World was engaging from the start and hard to put down. I quickly became invested in each character, all of whom are well-developed and complex. I feel like I need to read this book again and again to catch all of the nuance and subtle shifts in the relationships. Simpson's portrayal of mental illness (particularly depression) gives me insight as to how members of my own family may experience life. I'm certainly glad I chose this book for my first book of the year to read, and I look forward to re-reading it regularly.

I’ll start by saying that I really enjoyed this book

I’ll start by saying that I really enjoyed this book. To me the characters were heartfelt and charming, the plot was engaging, and many passages were wonderfully lyrical.

At its heart Light of the World is a book that explores puzzles. There is of course the overarching mystery of Eva’s grandmother as detailed in the book description. However, beyond that arc the book explores several interpersonal puzzles as well. The varying mysteries of family, friends, love and adulthood are explored and navigated by Eva in her journey to learn more about her grandmother, and I think Light is much richer for it.

One particularly interesting aspect was the narrative gave me pieces of the mystery that the characters Eva and her grandmother Mary didn’t have. To me it created a very engaging tension for me as the reader as I tried to pull my pieces of the puzzle together with the pieces that the characters discovered through their exploration.

I think most of all I enjoyed Eva’s daily life and exploration of the puzzle of adulthood, family, and love. Simpson very handily captures one’s ability to simultaneously love and be infuriated by one’s family. I have read few things that have encapsulated my own complexed feelings toward my loved ones as Light so perfectly does.

Beyond the puzzles I very much enjoyed the author’s ability to create turns of phrase that are vivid and lyrical. My favorite passage “She has pulled open my ribs and settled herself right beside my heart, nestled in against my soul and I do not think I could ever carve her out,” is indicative of Simpsons talent and storytelling ability as these passages are written not just for the joy of language but also serve narratively as well. Such lyrical passages often show the similar traits that Eva and her grandmother have in common and as such help to emphasize the parallels that Eva’s own story has to her grandmother’s.

Overall, definitely an enjoyable book that I recommend to anyone in the mood for a light mystery.

Good dictionary on these constructions

I'm not sure this is the exact same edition of this book, as the one I was looking at doesn't have the CD, and it includes 12,000 different English verbal phrases. But I couldn't find any other edition on Amazon, so I assume this is it, but I mention that just in case.
English has so many of these because of the decline of prefixes, which started somewhere between Old and Middle English, as Risto Hiltunen documented in his book, "The Decline of the Prefixes and the Beginnings of the English Phrasal Verb," which resulted in the development of separate pronouns and eventually verbal phrases. These are phrases such as "Come up on, run away from, brush up on, run out of," etc. This book documents and defines, as I said, 12,000, and is a very thick book as a result. I don't know how many of these there actually are in English, but 12,000 seems like a lot, so if you need a resource like this, I suspect it will probably have what you want.

Murder in the Northwest

This is an extremely well-written novel that moves along quite rapidly. The chapters are fairly short, so that the reader can put the book down (if he or she findss that possible) after just several pages, and continue reading later. I couldn't do that: I was hooked from the initial murder, and read my way all the way through it until the (expected, by me) ending. The characters well fairly well drawn, and the author creates quite a bit of sympathy for the female protagonist. If you want to spend some hours being captivated by a tremendous thriller, you will do well to pick up this book!

Plots and Subplots Thicken at Every Turn

This is a fast-paced convoluted twist of a thriller. We have our main character, lawyer Dana Hill, whose brother James is killed in an apparent blundered robbery attempt. But when she is cleaning out her brother's house, Dana finds a rare, custom-made earring that leads her to suspect there was more going on than just a bungled robbery.

She teams up with the detective in charge of the investigation, Michael Logan. Together they try to track down what really happened, who did what and most importantly, why.

The investigation leads Dana to Hawaii, and into the world of politics and high society in the Washington State area.

There are too many bodies cropping up to lead to the misconception that this was a random act.

The writing is relevant and believable, leading one to keep reading to see where the plot goes next.

Along with the main plot there are subplots, Dana's issues with breast cancer, a failed marriage, her conflicts with her employer and of course the relationship between her and Detective Logan.

The background scenery makes one want to visit Seattle, if nothing more than to see the landscape and experience the majesty of the area revealed in the text.

This is a good book to curl up with on a rainy afternoon and just keep reading until the end.

Damage Easily Controlled

This is an interesting novel incorporating murder, cancer, divorce, politics and the law. I know I have excluded other themes but I have listed the main ones and this is the slight weakness with this thriller. There are too many issues and I believe the reader would be better served with concentration on a few less. Dana Hill, twin, attorney extraordinaire, perfect mother, and possible breast cancer victim is an overworked working mother whose twin brother is killed in a brutal attack. She is having severe marital problems, her husband, Grant, does not behave well in any scene. He is a total jerk and we wonder why she ever married this loser. Anyway, Dana, in her grief-stricken state, is bound and determined to find the killer of her brother. Without revealing any more of the plot, Dana is able to resolve many issues which involve politics, spousal abuse and priceless jewelry design. I actually believe the most interesting part of this book was the Acknowledgements section by the author who gives us a fascintating background into his own family.
