FINALLY!!!! The book I've been searching for
By Linda P. Stauffer
I think I've bought every book available on kiln construction. They explain the methods of construction, how to lay bricks, show every imaginable kiln design, but nothing concrete. Finally Joe Finch has written THE book!! Complete plans for 3 specific kilns. A gas fired kiln, a combination gas/wood kiln and a wood fired kiln. Plans are specific and clear. Diagrams, materials list, tips and more. Joe is also quick to reply via email to any questions you might have. As soon as the snow melts I am finally going to build the gas/wood fired kiln!!!

Excellent guide
By Bruce H. Taylor
Having never built a kiln before this book is an invaluable source for how to construct a pottery kiln. The only reason I gave it four rather than five stars is that it is a British book and the metric system and refractories used are based on what is common in England and different to what is commonly available in America but the techniques and methods can be used for American products with success. I am very pleased with the content as there is no other book that is so clear in explaining step by step, brick by brick how to construct a kiln.

Walking with the Comrades, by Arundhati Roy

From the award-winning author of The God of Small Things comes a searing frontline exposé of brutal repression in India

In her latest book, internationally renowned author Arundhati Roy draws on her unprecedented access to a little-known rebel movement in India to pen a work full of earth-shattering revelations. Deep in the forests, under the pretense of battling Maoist guerillas, the Indian government is waging a vicious total war against its own citizens-a war undocumented by a weak domestic press and fostered by corporations eager to exploit the rare minerals buried in tribal lands. Roy takes readers to the unseen front lines of this ongoing battle, chronicling her months spent living with the rebel guerillas in the forests. In documenting their local struggles, Roy addresses the much larger question of whether global capitalism will tolerate any societies existing outside of its colossal control.

India colonizes itself
By GregJS
As a westerner, my main interest in India has been her spiritual heritage - mainly yoga and Hinduism. Ahimsa - non-violence - is one of the main principles of these spiritual systems. And since I have considered spirituality to be "universal truth," I have held ahimsa to be universally applicable, assuming that all people, in all situations, should practice non-violence. I thought the examples of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. clearly demonstrated how non-violence really can win in any situation. I remember driving - as a spiritual tourist - through certain parts of India where the hammer-and-sickle communist symbol was a regular sight, and thinking to myself, in my naive, simplistic morality, "How sad that even here - in pure and holy India - they have all this nasty political bickering and fighting!" I had no idea what was actually going on underneath the surface of my "pure and holy India."

Now, after reading Arundhati Roy's Walking With The Comrades, I at least have an inkling about what is going on underneath the surface - and it is very, very ugly. Huge corporations that control (i.e., own) the politicians, the media, and the police/military want the mineral and resource-rich land where India's tribal people are still attempting to live their lives. Those corporations will stop at nothing to get it. Their only view of the world is that it should be exploited to the maximum degree possible - for profit. As a result, all over India, they have wreaked environmental disaster and have displaced untold numbers of people, sending them to live in shantytowns on the outskirts of cities (I have seen them, and they are shockingly squalid) or hiring them as cheap semi-slaves who have no real rights or security and no real access to education or medical care. They have rigged the entire political-economic-military system in their favor in order to be able to do this. In the eastern part of the country, one group has arisen that has had some success defending tribal peoples against the encroachments of the corporations: the communist, Maoist Naxalites. And they do it by fighting - and killing - with guns.

At great risk, Roy embedded herself with a group of forest-dwelling Naxalites and describes their day-to-day lives, their organization, their history, and the ways they have been deceptively misportrayed in the corporate-owned media. Along the way, she humanizes people who have only ever been portrayed as bloodthirsty terrorists, showing them to be real, often lovely, and very dignified, deeply community-minded people fighting for real, human values; people who simply want to be allowed to live their lives. Roy also makes a larger point that concerns us all: wherever tribal peoples are killed off, we lose the people "who still know the secrets of sustainable living."

Roy's book has confronted me - more squarely than ever before - with the stark reality of people living right at this moment, in the so-called "democratic world," who have no choice but to fight and kill or else be wiped out. Can any of us in the west imagine having to face this choice? In this reality, which I have never wanted to look at or even be aware of, there is a clear and obvious difference between the ridiculously wealthy corporations - who kill in order to make themselves even more ridiculously wealthy - and the Naxalites and tribal peoples - who kill only to stop others from either running them off their land (which amounts to killing them) or outright killing them. These are two totally different - almost opposite - forms of violence.

So, would my cherished, universal, spiritual non-violence work for these tribal peoples? I cannot say for sure, but Roy suggests not, and I think I believe her. Ahimsa may be an inviolable spiritual principle; but it may not apply in the perverse reality created by corporatism-gone-mad (which is the only form of it there seems to be).

I'll end with the reflection that, here in America, the exact same forces are at play, only in a slightly different key. Here, large corporations, who also own the politicians, the media, and the pepper-spray-happy police/military, are a bit more polished and restrained. They do not dislocate and kill us in as obvious and blatant a way as they do in India and other parts of the world. This gives us the illusion of having more of a choice in how to respond to them - or even to not respond at all. Maybe non-violent, political resistance makes sense here, at least for now (where at least we have some corporate-free news shows like DemocracyNow! - where I learned about this book - to give fair coverage to such non-violent resistance). But as corporate power continues to grow over here, maybe we should keep the Naxalites in mind - and even view them as, dare I say it, our comrades.

Maybe I'm still being naïve - but probably less so than before I read this powerful book.

A Compelling and Hard Hitting Book
By S. Duke
There's something stirring in India. A specter, if you will, of a dark time arisen and a dark time to come. Whether we call it capitalism, corporatism, or new (neo) Imperialism, the fact remains that those most affected by the shifting dynamics of contemporary industrialization will be the disenfranchised and the disinherited.

Arundhati Roy's (The God of Small Things, etc.) Walking with the Comrades waltzes straight into this new Indian world with passion and focus, chronicling her journey into the forests of India where Maoists and the few remaining indigenous people have dug in their heels. Each new day brings her closer to the heart of the movement that has set India's government on fire, spawning new counter-revolutionary police forces and new regulations and laws to strip people of their land for corporate profit. In the process, she crafts a disturbing narrative of the new Indian state, one
which will seem suspiciously familiar to Americans who know a little about the United States' history with the Native Americans.

Walking with the Comrades is a quick read, though by no means an easy one. Roy spends considerable time setting the stage for her walk with the Maoist "revolutionaries" in the forests of India. She provides cogent analyses of the Indian government's old and new programs for stifling dissent, the language they use, and the results of their activities. Likewise, she explores the history of communism in India, leading us through suppression, violent acts, revolts, and the mindset of the people on the ground -- the very comrades with which she walks. Walking with the Comrades, as such, is part of the grand tradition of travel narratives, but it is also an expansion of Roy's long and distinguished career as a novelist and cultural critic.

And it's the travel narrative aspect which is most compelling. True, Walking with the Comrades is about the political and economic situation in contemporary India, but it also an attempt to put a face on the great "security threat" of India. It's a clever tactic, because understanding that there are humans behind the mask of terror forces us to think about who we are fighting against, and why they are resisting. In the case of India, the Maoists are fighting a government that wants communism in all its forms destroyed, and the indigenous people protected by Maoists -- even if only for political gain -- moved off and adapted for industrial society -- at the expense of their traditions, native lands, etc. To realize who the Maoists are is to make blind faith to India's new cultural projects impossible, if not because we care about the Maoists and their goals -- most of us in the U.S. likely do not because we have a tendency to be ruthlessly anti-communist here -- then at least because we understand why they are doing what they do. Perhaps it's the optimist in me thinks that maybe reasonable compromise can be found in this cesspool of violence and hatred if only we can see the humanity in everything.

Still, some might be willing to dismiss Roy's work simply because she often provides polemics and doesn't seem altogether genuine when she concedes points to the opposition; in the case of Walking with the Comrades, Roy occasionally tries to suggest that the Indian government might have a solid rationale for some of their actions, yet the overwhelming majority of the book rips India to shreds, thereby weakening the conciliatory gesture. But to dismiss the book for this reason would be to discount what is clearly a problem that transcends borders and exposes the divisions and strategies utilized by a government bent not on compromises with indigenous people, but the destruction of their way of life. Even if you shrug Roy off as a wacky liberal, the facts point to a disturbing history which does not paint a pretty image for the Indian state. And even if you look at the other side, it's hard to ignore the words spoken by the people in charge, the projects set in place, the militarization of the police, and the general sense that things are not as they should be.

It's perhaps for that reason that I come out of Roy's book feeling unable to challenge the anger and disbelief she channels throughout her book, despite wearing my critical thinking cap during the reading process. Roy doesn't pull many punches when she attacks India's government and the corporations attached to it, but I found myself wondering why she bothered pulling the ones she did. If her facts are in order -- they are -- then what the Indian government is doing doesn't deserve conciliatory gestures, friendly discussion, or calm reasoning. Rather, it seems to me that to fight an extremist state, one must attack it with an extreme position. Roy certainly heads in that direction, and the result is an enormously educational reading experience. When I finished reading, I wondered where we are supposed to go from here. Maybe Roy will cover that in her next book...

Walking with the Comrades is one of the most compelling non-fiction books I have read this year, and certainly one worth remembering for years to come. If you're interested in contemporary Indian history or global capitalism, this is a book to add to your collection.

5 Stars
By Gerard Cruz
5 Stars to Walking with the Comrades, by Arundati Roy. Once again, the author bridges a difficult subject concisely and with the proper amount of literary courage and heart. The subject of the indigenous struggle against corporatism and government complicity is a non starter for most news media today, whose editorials are either controlled or owned by corporatist or state. Bravo Arundati!

You will probably be purchasing this book for the same reason I did: you are in some kind of advanced degree program, and it's required for the course. And that would be the only reason I would condone buying it.

This book is dry, folks. And it's filled with little gems like "employees learn more from training programs they enjoy." Oh really? REALLY??

This title is valuable and should be reprinted.
By A Customer
For those fascinated with religion in general and Islam in particular, Cyril Glasse's book is a treasure. I purchased my copy in 1991. I would pour over the work for hours, letting one entry guide me to others, often forgetting what I had originally sought to investigate. It is, indeed, a popular, one-volume dictionary written in an accessible prose style. The entries are brief and to the point, providing enough information to answer an immediate question about the religion, but also enough to encite further investigation of the topic in a larger work. The print is easy to read. All topics related to Islam are covered, including not only Sunni and Shiite Islam, but also the various sects that have evolved from Islam, such as the Bahais and the Druze. Theology, mysticism, folk belief, law, history, art as each pertains to Islam are fully covered. In many entries, Glasse compares Islamic belief and worship with those of Judaism and Christianity. Glasse's work covers all geographic areas of Islam, too, not just the Arabian heartland. The Encyclopedia lists entries according to Arabic tranliteration, but also lists reference entries in anglisized spellings. Some beautiful photographs illustrate the work and the appendix contains a graphic timeline of the development of Islam. I can not say enough about the value of the Concise Encyclopedia of Islam; I've learned more from it than from most narrative accounts of Islam. When, a year or so ago, I lost my copy during a move, I was deeply saddened to find that HarperCollins has chosen not to reprint the title. I understand the title is not technically out of print, but it is nonetheless unavailable. This review, then, is a plea for HarperCollins to reissue the Encyclopedia in the near future. The energy and committment that Glasse must have given to his research and its worthy results should not remain unavailable.

Best general reference on Islam in our library
By A Customer
I was not aware that the book was out of print. It is a very unfortunate situation for those seeking a general reference on Islam. None of the 27 English-language texts we have on the subject even approach the breadth and presentation of this encyclopedia. I should hope that it will either be reprinted or released in a new edition. I do not easily give 10s in my reviews but this book certainly deserves it.

Achieving Our Country : Leftist Thought in Twentieth-Century America, by Richard Rorty

Must the sins of America's past poison its hope for the future? Lately the American Left, withdrawing into the ivied halls of academe to rue the nation's shame, has answered yes in both word and deed. In Achieving Our Country, one of America's foremost philosophers challenges this lost generation of the Left to understand the role it might play in the great tradition of democratic intellectual labor that started with writers like Walt Whitman and John Dewey.

How have national pride and American patriotism come to seem an endorsement of atrocities--from slavery to the slaughter of Native Americans, from the rape of ancient forests to the Vietnam War? Achieving Our Country traces the sources of this debilitating mentality of shame in the Left, as well as the harm it does to its proponents and to the country. At the center of this history is the conflict between the Old Left and the New that arose during the Vietnam War era. Richard Rorty describes how the paradoxical victory of the antiwar movement, ushering in the Nixon years, encouraged a disillusioned generation of intellectuals to pursue "High Theory" at the expense of considering the place of ideas in our common life. In this turn to theory, Rorty sees a retreat from the secularism and pragmatism championed by Dewey and Whitman, and he decries the tendency of the heirs of the New Left to theorize about the United States from a distance instead of participating in the civic work of shaping our national future.

In the absence of a vibrant, active Left, the views of intellectuals on the American Right have come to dominate the public sphere. This galvanizing book, adapted from Rorty's Massey Lectures of 1997, takes the first step toward redressing the imbalance in American cultural life by rallying those on the Left to the civic engagement and inspiration needed for "achieving our country."

Amazon.com Review
There are many shameful incidents in America's past: the institution of slavery, genocidal assaults on the indigenous peoples of this continent, the escalation of the Vietnam War, and so on. What should our response to such acts be? Should we regard the nation as irredeemably tainted by sin and spend our time cataloging its evils, or should we acknowledge its shortcomings and make a conscious effort to turn it into a better nation?

Philosopher Richard Rorty believes that there is hope for America, but that today's Left is not meeting the challenge. He contrasts the cultural, academic Left's focus on our heritage of shame (which, he admits, has to the extent that it makes hatred intolerable had the positive effect of making America a more civil society) with the politically engaged reformist Left of the early part of this century. "The distinction between the old strategy and the new is important," he writes. "The choice between them makes the difference between what Todd Gitlin calls common dreams and what Arthur Schlesinger calls disuniting Americans. To take pride in being black or gay is an entirely reasonable response to the sadistic humiliation to which one has been subjected. But insofar as this pride prevents someone from also taking pride in being an American citizen, from thinking of his or her country as capable of reform, or from being able to join with straights or whites in reformist initiatives, it is a political disaster."

Not everyone, to be sure, is going to agree with Rorty's ideas. But his approach to civic life, which is pragmatic in the tradition of John Dewey and visionary in the tradition of Walt Whitman, is bound to provoke increased discussion of what it is to be a citizen, and his call for a renewed awareness of the history of American reformist activism can only be applauded.

From Library Journal
Rorty contrasts two views of America: those of the Old Left and of the New Left. The Old Left he associates with Walt Whitman's "American Dream" and John Dewey's idea of an ever-evolving secular society of varied, autonomous agents whose evils are remediable because they result from failures of imagination. The New Left he associates with spectators who damn America for such past "atrocities" as slavery, the massacre of Indians, and the Vietnam War. Rorty claims that the Old Left was stubbornly reformist, whereas the New Left collaborates with and thereby empowers the Right by supplanting real politics with cultural issues. He urges the New Left to understand that our national character has not been settled but is still being formed. The book contrasts the two Lefts clearly enough, but the rest of it is rather foggy with occasional flashes of light. For larger academic libraries only.ARobert Hoffman, York Coll., CUNY

From Kirkus Reviews
In this slim volume (from a series of lectures), eminent liberal political theorist Rorty passes judgment on the state of the US left. And he is not amused. Beginning from familiar places for him, John Dewey and Walt Whitman, Rorty (Humanities/Univ. Of Virginia) argues that the faith of these men in what the US might become, their dismissal of all closed systems of thinking, their turn from religious authority to secular joy in the contingent process of democratic creation are all aspects of leftist thought missing from today's left, much to its detriment. In place of the search for a moral identity that will inspire and unite us, the left todaywhat he calls the ``academic'' or ``cultural'' lefthas opted instead for a ``detached spectatorship,'' condemnation without action or hope. Rorty traces the origins of this spectatorship to theorists such as Foucault, who insists on the irresistible ubiquitousness of power. The appeal of such spectatorship he traces to the US New Left and its experience with the Vietnam War. In Vietnam the US ``sinned,'' became beyond redemption, and so the New Left turned its back on ever reforming such a place. The Left retreated to academia, theory, culture, and spectatorship. This is all, however, a very familiar scenario by now (if argued in an interestingly odd way), and one wonders why it needs repeating, Rorty seems only to be using the New Left as a straw person here, and his depiction of the ``academic'' Left is caricature. Assertion substitutes for analysis. Lapses in logic occur: He chastises the Left, for instance, for being both Marxist and ``postmodern,'' yet the two tendencies stand mostly opposed to each other. Like an obscure club recording from a major jazz musician, this is a minor work from a profound thinker that perhaps only true devotees of Rorty will find of value. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. and prominent journalists like Bill Moyers and Amy Goodman
By Sean
Apart from the works of Cornel West, Thomas Frank, and prominent journalists like Bill Moyers and Amy Goodman, this book is a powerful statement on the American political climate in the late 20th century, which will deserve a place in history and political science courses decades from now. Anybody who watched the 2016 presidential primary race should be able to see that Rorty was right: whether you supported Bernie Sanders or not, there has been a clear shift in Leftist politics ever since Jerry Brown lost the race to Bill Clinton. The Democratic party shifted towards the center-right, and many millions of Americans have for one or another reason become spectators. This applies to politics as well as "pragmatism" within the academic world, or at least the social sciences. The rise of Donald Trump can also be traced to this self-induced Babel curse, where liberals seem to have forgotten how to articulate and defend their values. The main point being, patriotism is not just waving flags and spending a third of every tax dollar on a military-industrial complex. Patriotism is about participation in a democratic project, one that is safe from despots only insofar as we put in the effort to inform ourselves and critically engage one another.
Read and you may be as surprised at the prescience!

A light, but deep philosophical and political read from one of the most important American thinkers.
By Keanu
I must have purchased this book over three times; the friends I lend it to never seem to return it. This book by Richard Rorty does not have the impact of his masterworks such as "Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature" or "Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity," but deserves its place on the bookshelf of any student of Rorty, Pragmatism, or liberal politics in America. Every time I read this book it instills a sense of pride in American intellectualism and leaves me feeling an optimistic political agent.

This book is a collection of lectures and should not be treated as if it were to be a rigorous work in philosophy. For this reason I find it quite enjoyable. I do not find myself picking up "Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity" very often, but I tend to pick this off the shelf once a year. The prose is quite eloquent and easy to read, which results in an enjoyable, but thought provoking experience.

The interesting thing about this book is that, despite being a work of political philosophy, the heroes often championed are not just philosophers, but literary writers such as Walt Whitman. Although not a central argument to the book, is does reflect Rorty's belief that philosophers have no exclusive domain over the realms of political thought and the truth. For this reason I believe this book is even great for the non-philosopher; it's prose is more accessible as a lecture, but also practices philosophy with a sense of humility.

In terms of content the most poignant for me is not the question of left vs. right, but what Rorty calls the "progressive left" and the "critical left." The critical left being the side that views the sins of America as an unforgivable impasse which is stuck in the mode of a spectator. The progressive left, on the other hand, acknowledges these wrong-doings, but believes that our ideal country can still be achieved. The progressive left is that of the political agent; those that still have a hope for a more just world.

Overall I highly recommend this book to philosophers and non-philosophers alike. For a book of such intellectual depth, it is quite a leisurely and interesting read; perhaps that has to do with some of the more anecdotal accounts of Rorty once served snacks to John Dewey and Carlo Tresca at a Halloween party his parents hosted during his childhood. This book is great to have on your own shelf, but also great to gift to the young political thinker.

A Must Read!
By drbobert
Richard Rorty's book, Achieving Our Country, is a must read for anybody fed up with today's politics of hate and who want to perform some constructive action to help re-claim a constructive climate in American society. His introduction is worth reading alone!

While the first printing was, I believe in 1997, it is timely in its characterization of what is currently happening in American politics and society. His premise is that there are a lot of angry young people standing on the sidelines is an apt one. Unlike Egypt where Twitter and Facebook helped spur a revolutionary social experiment (of which time will tell), American youth sit ensconced and isolated with their laptops and just bitch (my take from my experience).

His essay goes on to show who the idealism of the New Deal liberals that reformed American society (he also delineates between reformers and radicals) succumbed to its own success and attachment to the past. It took the radicals of the 60s to overcome the inertia and begin a new social revolution. In contrast to today's reactionary/radical christian movement, the revolution of the 60s as Rorty explains was a revolution forward, not an ideological movement to the "good old days." Indeed, what Rorty proposes is to re-examine the "spirit" of Walt Whitmann and John Dewey to revitalize thought and experimentalism in American society. (A proposition that I heartily agree with!) Unfortunately it takes courage and being a "little hungry", not complacently anger in the confines of an internet game room.

Rorty's last essay is almost prophetic in describing the rich/poor gap within the world. He quotes some general statistics that are being experienced today as the super rich begin to build their own dynasties, and "neo-liberal" economic ideology preaches "privatize everything" and let's not have anything called an "american spirit" which is a spirit of constructive growth and experimentation. (A principle tenet of philosophical pragmatism as edified by John Dewey and others).

The key action Rorty states is that to be proud of one's country means to have the courage to constructively critize it and take action to make it better, and considering that with the internet and other technological advances, we must all have the courage to look at each other as citizens of a country and of a planet.

I have a hard time holding on to a copy of this book because I keep giving it to people. I think I am on my eighth copy. I now buy at least 2 at a time. I was just visiting friends in Oregon and their 20yr old son has left for Egypt for a year of study. He is a bright boy and had inherited the intelligence, grounding and courage of his parents. Luckily, I had a copy with me. It will be young people like him that might just try another grand experiment!

When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead: Useful Stories from a Persuasive Man, by Jerry Weintraub, Rich Cohen, George Clooney (foreword)

Here is the story of Jerry Weintraub: the self-made, Brooklyn-born, Bronx-raised impresario, Hollywood producer, legendary deal maker, and friend of politicians and stars. No matter where nature has placed him--the club rooms of Brooklyn, the Mafia dives of New York's Lower East Side, the wilds of Alaska, or the hills of Hollywood--he has found a way to put on a show and sell tickets at the door. "All life was a theater and I wanted to put it up on a stage," he writes. "I wanted to set the world under a marquee that read: 'Jerry Weintraub Presents.'"

In WHEN I STOP TALKING, YOU'LL KNOW I'M DEAD, we follow Weintraub from his first great success at age twenty-six with Elvis Presley, whom he took on the road; to the immortal days with Sinatra and Rat Pack glory; to his crowning hits as a movie producer, starting with Robert Altman and Nashville, continuing with Oh, God!, The Karate Kid movies, and Diner, among others, and summiting with Steven Soderbergh and Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen.

Along the way, we'll watch as Jerry moves from the poker tables of Palm Springs, to the power rooms of Hollywood, to the halls of the White House, to Red Square in Moscow-all the while counseling potentates, poets, and kings, with clients and confidants like George Clooney, Bruce Willis, George H. W. Bush, Armand Hammer, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, John Denver, Bobby Fischer . . .well, the list goes on.

And of course, the story is not yet over . . . As Weintraub says, "When I stop talking, you'll know I'm dead."

From Publishers Weekly
Hollywood power player Weintraub, now 72, is always in control and goes to great lengths to prove it: besides having managed musical legends like Presley, Sinatra and John Denver ("I cooked him from scratch"), Weintraub once closed a deal by faking a heart attack, and won the respect of one of Chicago's most powerful men, Arthur Wirtz, when he cursed Wirtz out for making him wait (Wirtz would go on to become one of Weintraub's mentors). Weintraub's also produced plays, TV shows, movies (from Nashville to the Ocean's 11 franchise), and more, summing up his talent simply: "When I believe in something, it's going to get done." Edgy and honest but refreshingly spare in his criticism of stars, colleagues and family, Weintraub can be forgiven for glossing over speed bumps in his career (one failed business lost $30 million before it closed in the mid-'80s) and occasionally showing his age with wandering rumination. As Weintraub repeatedly states, he is not a star, which perhaps that explains the disappointing omission of photos. Still, with a bold voice, a storied career, and a cast of superstars, his memoir makes a rousing insider tour of some five decades in the entertainment industry.

Review
"Now, I could tell you stories about Jerry, but Jerry is the first and best to tell them. He's funny and grumpy and perfectly inappropriate. When it comes to work, nobody works harder. When it comes to charities, nobody guilts better. And when it comes to friendship, he has no peers. That's Jerry's great talent. He doesn't just light up a room, he lights it on fire. He's a great producer, a great organizer, a great friend, and truly the greatest showman on earth."―George Clooney

"Edgy and honest but refreshingly spare in his criticism of stars, colleagues and family . . . With a bold voice, a storied career, and a cast of superstars, Weintraub's memoir makes a rousing insider tour of some five decades in the entertainment industry."―Publisher's Weekly

"As the title of the book indicates, Weintraub loves to talk. And the 72-year-old impresario has some amazing stories to tell . . . All the stories are told in Weintraub's shooting-the-breeze voice. Credit for the easy-to-read style goes to Rich Cohen, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair magazine who turned Weintraub's tales into a breezy first-person narrative."―Rick Warner, Bloomberg News

"It reads at times like a screenplay: a rags-to-riches tale complete with stunning reversals of fortune, punchy dialogue, and star cameos galore . . . Even the lows are enviable."―Nathaniel Rich, VANITY FAIR

"Jerry has made a fascinating career for himself by finding ways to put on a show and sell tickets at the door. Jerry has bloomed wherever he's been planted. His life has put him in the company of greats like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Rat Pack, Robert Altman, and Steven Soderbergh, to name a few. Jerry's story chronicles his journey that involved a lot of improvising, love, and of course, luck. This story isn't just for music or movie lovers, or entrepreneurs....it's for everyone. So, pick up your copy of When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead by Jerry Weintraub... If there was a Mount Rushmore of legendary show business figures, he'd be one of them."―Don Imus

"When I Stop Talking is anything but a rote, let-the-record-show memoir . . . Although it's packed with stories he's surely been telling at dinner forever, the book is also a modest set of guidelines for how you too can be a successful mogul . . . it's written with stealth and style, doubtless shaped by his co-writer, Rich Cohen . . . The book, really, is a performance, a monologue by a guy comfortable hanging with Armand Hammer at Leonid Brezhnev's funeral or with Joey Bishop at a deli. It's a show based on horse pucky on braggadocio."―RJ Smith, LA Times

"This is a guy who can tell a story. And boy does he have stories to tell."―People Magazine

"Weintraub knows a thing or two about placing bets. And his latest venture sounds like a sure thing-an autobiography, pithily titled When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead: Useful Stories from a Persuasive Man . . . [it's] a gripping personal story."―Entertainment Weekly

"Old chestnuts from this journey are lovingly, and often hilariously, burnished in Weintraub's new memoir, When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead . . . The book, which is in no way a scandalous, showbiz tell-all, but a good-humored, and often self-deprecating romp of outrageous will and amazing fortune, also paints a picture of uncanny bliss."―Nicole LaPorte, The Daily Beast

“It reads at times like a screenplay: a rags-to-riches tale complete with stunning reversals of fortune, punchy dialogue, and star cameos galore . . . Even the lows are enviable...In the book’s most entertaining stories he not only has to sell an audience on a celebrity but also has to sell the celebrity on himself . . .’I’ll tell you my biggest talent,’ say Weintraub. ‘When I believe in something, it’s going to get done.’ No reader of his memoir will need to be convinced of that.” (Nathaniel Rich, Vanity Fair )

Great Life, Great Book
By Rob Gordon
Rich Cohen--I've been reading him for ten years--is one of the country's best writers. Jerry Weintraub--film producer, musician manager, deal maker--is one of the nation's best livers. (Mention an event, a celebrity, the man has a story.) Cohen can write anything; Weintraub has done nearly everything. Which is what makes this book such a perfect match. Weintraub is the real deal--came up without money or the helping hands than can do the work of money; produced the three "Ocean's Eleven" pictures, also "Nashville" and "Diner" (two decades' great classics), also managed Elvis, also Sinatra, also the chess-champion Bobby Fischer at Reykjavik. It's an amazing story. Weintraub goes everywhere and does everything; he heads someplace, arrives, finds himself at the center. A gift, which he discovers in himself and develops. He found a way to take Elvis on the road at 26, to bring Sinatra's career back at 35; when he's watching the Fischer chess championship on TV, he just buys a ticket, flies to Iceland, and more or less enters the screen himself. (That's one lesson Weintraub teaches from his kind of life. Find what you love, trust it. Then act.) The story is filled with advice, plus advice-by-example: hustling in the beginning, finding the angle, picking your allies--"If you work with people you love, which, of course, is not always possible, the hard times become an epic adventure"--then getting to a place where your own work functions as an ad, as the attraction: "I did not have to hustle quite as much. Once you've established yourself, you can, to some extent, let business find you. You become a beacon, a door into a better life."

Weintraub's own life swings into the rat pack and Sinatra (first call to Weintraub: "Look, kid, when I say I want to meet that means now"), the White House, Hollywood, Palm Desert: the five great gambling cities (Peking, Moscow, Las Vegas, Washington, Hollywood). Because of his gifts, Weintraub goes everywhere and does everything. His story is a chronicle, a great life, one giant path through the last fifty years. And Cohen, who loves to write lives like this (the corporate big shoulders in "Sweet and Low," the resistance fighters in "The Avengers") helps him tell this story. An incredible mix: Weintraub's friendships, destinations, experiences, lessons, voice, advice; Cohen's speed, words, eye. You feel you're there, which is the first requirement of any writing, and still the hardest one to bring off. You live Weintraub's incredible life alongside him. So the thing reads like a great Saul Bellow novel that also happens to be true--the skinny kid who chucks home, finds the center, makes it big. And there's the great thought that somehow, on some reclining chair with a phone at his ear and some big pending deal and expensive view, Weintraub is living the next chapter. A great mix, a great read. As Sinatra might say, You don't read it; you breathe it.

Typical Hollywood Self-Promotion
By Diego Banducci
Based upon Harvey Levin's description of this as a "Great Book" on TMZ, I bought a copy. Unfortunately, it is not, for the following reasons:

1. The book was ghost-written by Rich Cohn and lacks the immediacy and integrity it would have had if Mr. Weintraub had written it himself;

2. There is an endless parade of all the important people Mr. Weintraub has run into during his life;

3. Mr. Weintraub uncritically fawns all over said important people; and

4. Mr. Weintraub tells us about all of his successes, but none of his failures.

In other words, the reader comes away with the impression that the book is dishonest.

For example, Mr. Weintraub spends a good deal of time eulogizing Elvis Presley's manager, "Colonel" Tom Parker, a bilious bag of gas who took far more than the traditional 10% of Elvis's earnings (reaching 50% by the end of Presley's life). After Elvis's death in 1997, Parker became embroiled in legal claims with Elvis's estate for overreaching, eventually agreeing to sell masters of some of Elvis's major recordings for $2 million and to drop any claims he might have against the estate. It was also later discovered that he was not a U.S. citizen (he was born in the Netherlands) a fact that many believe caused him not to seek concert opportunities for Presley abroad. Even his assumed title of "Colonel" was phony; he was, at best, a "Kentucky Colonel." But Mr. Weintraub discusses none of this in his extensive descriptions of his relationship with Mr. Parker.

There is no question that Mr. Weintraub has the experience to write a great book about the entertainment industry. This is not it.

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "HE DIDN'T ATTEND HARVARD, PRINCETON, STANFORD... HE WENT TO THE SCHOOL OF SINATRA!"
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
Jerry Weintraub was born in 1937 in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx. He was what he and I term a street-wise Jewish New Yorker who wound up as one of Hollywood's true elite impresarios'. Jerry was blessed with two wonderful loving parents... but along with playing stickball and stoopball (which of course... as any New York kid would know included a Spalding!)... Jerry knew he didn't want to go to college... and even though his Dad taught him about the jewelry business he knew he didn't want to become part of his Dad's business. He didn't really know what he wanted but he knew it wasn't that. When he was fourteen-years-old he and a friend ran away from home and with very little money started hitch hiking to Florida. They made it as far as Myrtle Beach before giving up. When he was seventeen-years-old and before he graduated high school he had his parents sign a consent form and he joined the Air Force. He started his training at Keesler Air Force Base (Note: The author mistakenly calls it Kessler Air Force Base. I should know the correct name since I was stationed there approximately sixteen-years after Jerry.) in Biloxi, Mississippi. Jerry discusses the anti-Semitism he encountered there... including circumstances that resulted in him having breakfast with a Klansman. (Note to Jerry: Sixteen years later I ran into the same anti-Semitism and though I didn't have breakfast with a Klansman... I did witness crosses being burned on the lawn of the base... and also was subjected to anti-Semitism by NCOs' very similar to yours.) The author's first person narrative is enticing and near hypnotic as it becomes obvious Jerry has unmatched drive... and a truckload of *CHUTZPAH*... and never hesitated in taking advantage of every opportunity... whether it was offered... or if his inner drive created it himself. After Mississippi Jerry was assigned to Alaska and when he took a part-time job while he was still in the service he came up with the idea of selling complete tropical vacation packages including clothing to freezing locals.

After getting out of the service Jerry's life is a world-wind of mostly self-created opportunity and riches. Just like in a movie... one of his early jobs is in a major talent agencies mailroom. From there in dizzying sequences that you won't be able to keep in chronological order... nor do you need to... he takes Elvis Presley on nationwide concert tours working with one of his marketing idols the legendary Colonel Tom Parker... handles Frank Sinatra... confronts the Mafia... discovers John Denver and molds him into one of the highest paid entertainers in the world... and as they say "SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS"... and he winds up in business with... and lifelong friends with... and advising... everyone from Presidents... to Prime Minister's... to a who's-who of the world's richest men... and marrying one of his early clients Jane Morgan who at that time was one of the most famous entertainer's in the world. He proceeds to not only become one of the top agents in the world... but he becomes a top movie producer... Broadway producer... investor... it's as if a Jewish-street-fighting-silver-tongued- Forrest Gump- with- a -Midas-touch- and- a- gift- for- gab... was literally making up stories of success as he goes... but they're all true.

In the more recent past he produced the "OCEAN'S-ELEVEN-TWELVE-THIRTEEN" trilogy which grossed over ONE-BILLION-DOLLARS... and of course became loving-special-friends with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon... and if that isn't enough he fell in love with a new young girl friend and told his wife of forty-eight-years about it... and she wouldn't divorce him. They discussed it openly with his kids and grandkids and all of them get along fine. As much as any average person would become uncontrollably jealous of a man who has accumulated so much... and who could "name-drop" for thirty days straight and still not repeat a name... it's impossible not to love this guy and root for him. His story telling is absolutely *MESMERIZING*... and when this book ends... your only complaint is that you want more stories!

Review
"The explosive growth of pharmacologic information in recent decades has resulted in vast amounts of complex information that is often difficult for busy clinicians to assimilate and prioritize. The Handbook of Veterinary Pharmacology offers a solution to this quandary by providing a concise reference for veterinary students and practitioners. I would recommend it for veterinary students as an excellent source of review material and for practitioners as a good starting point for questions regarding specific treatments." (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, March 2009)

“Any vet school or practicing vet needs Handbook of Veterinary Pharmacology: it's a guide to pharmacology concepts and commonly used veterinary drugs and provides an easy outline format to allow for quick access to drug information. Easy line drawings showing the mechanisms of action and study questions are included at the end of each chapter, with details on drug dosages, drug therapy for different domestic species, and clear diagrams. Perfect for students and practicing vets seeking a quick reference.” (Midwest Book Review, January 2009)

"This handbook for veterinary pharmacology has been designed as a quick reference in the field for practical drug information, including data on drug interactions and legal considerations. Hsu (Iowa State U. College of Veterinary Medicine) has arranged this reference to emphasize the most commonly used drugs to treat animals, and includes plenty of diagrams and illustrations to explain the chemical mechanisms behind each medication. Study questions have been provided at the end of each chapter, which will enable this book to be used in the classroom as well." (SciTech Book News, December 2008)
