An excellent, effective and enlightening 'production and operations management' textbook.

This is an excellent textbook related to production and operations management. I have come to like it because of its highly effective usefulness, better presentation and very easy to understand design, type setting and description.

I have chosen this rating because I consider this textbook as one of the best in the market today. The main reason why I have decided to choose this very high rating for this textbook is that being a business and management professor at an American State University for the last four-and-a-half years, I have myself taught it in my 'BSAD0455 Production and Operations Management' class for several semesters. I have no hesitation or deliberation to state that this textbook is one of the most informative, reliable and best of its kind publications that I have come across so far in my academic career.

Being a mechanical engineer by trade, I have found this textbook as a useful addition for the industry practitioners like me because of its vast effectiveness from the industry perspective. I will strongly recommend this textbook equally to all of my friends, academics, experts, professors and practitioners as well as to my own State University faculty and staff members, students as well as the library resource centers.

Attested since the fourteenth century BC, and still spoken today by over 10 million people, Greek has been one of the most influential languages in human history. English, Spanish, French, Russian and Arabic are among the many languages to have borrowed key terms and concepts from Greek.

A Brief History of Ancient Greek takes the reader through the history of this ancient language from its Indo-European beginnings right up to the present day, and explains key relationships between the language and literature of the Classical period (500 - 300 BC). The development of the language is also related to the social and political context, in line with modern sociolinguistic thought. The book reflects the latest scholarship on subjects such as Koiné Greek, and the relationship between literary and vernacular Greek.

All Greek is transliterated and translated where appropriate, so that the text is accessible to readers who know little or no Greek, including scholars and students who require an accessible overview of the history of the language, or linguists and professionals who need a quick source of data and background information.

About the Author

Stephen Colvin is Reader in Classics and Historical Linguistics at University College London. Previously, he was Associate Professor in the Department of Classics at Yale. He is the author of Dialect in Aristophanes (1999), A Historical Greek Reader (2007), and editor of The Greco-Roman East: Politics, Culture, Society (2004).

Leanne Brown is a writer and avid home cook born and raised in Edmonton but currently living in New York City. She believes everyone deserves to eat good food every day and that cooking is the key. Unclear, Contradictory, and Disappointing

I really wanted to like this book. My doctor recently recommended I cut back on sugar for the candida factor, and I'd heard the buzz about IQS and thought I'd give it a try. So I did, and I was really into the idea of a sugar detox -- but as I read more (the actual program portion of the book is VERY short, as it turns out) I grew increasingly frustrated and disappointed. But the truth is, this book is poorly organized and lacks rigor. I expected Wilson to cite a lot more research and deliver more statistics and actual information, but she didn't.

The biggest problem, however, is that it really is not a "program." There's hardly any structure. The weekly breakdowns are just collections of sidebars and offer vague tips. She's also huge on butter, coconut oil, and other foods dense in saturated fat. I'm all for whole, full-fat foods, and I think saturated fat probably has gotten an unfairly bad rap, but the research doesn't quite exist to support the idea of eating plenty of it -- which is why you won't find any backup in the book. Aside from that, I have a lot of smaller (but actually still important) quibbles: Despite reading it multiple times, I still can't tell whether you have to give up stevia at any point. Or cinnamon. Furthermore, the recipe section includes a block of "detox" recipes, but it's not clear whether you're supposed to stick to those recipes exclusively during the "detox" weeks (which I think are weeks 3 through 5) or throughout the whole program.

My problem with this book can be summed up by a single, glaring contradiction that I haven't been able to reconcile despite searching iquitsugar.com extensively and Googling for an answer. I actually did see another reader ask this question in a comments section about the online program, but no one from the customer service team replied to her. Here's the contradiction -- check the book for yourself to confirm (I'm using the paperback U.S. edition):

* On page 26 ("Week 3: Quit!"), Wilson lists items that "must go" starting that day, "with no exceptions." Item #1: Fresh and dried fruit, fruit juice.

* On page 41 ("Week 5: Get Creative, Experiment ... and Detox"), Wilson recommends 3 recipes to try that week. The first one is the Sweet Green Meal-in-a-Tumbler, found on page 110. Flip to page 110 and check the first 3 ingredients of the smoothie: 1/2 grapefruit, 1/2 lemon, 1/2 green apple.

What? Why? Elsewhere in the book she even includes apples on a list of high-fructose fruits that should be avoided altogether.

I'll keep the book around for some sugar-free recipes, but that's about it. I'm just going to cut back on sugar in some smart, basic ways and move on with my life. I'm a little angry that I fell for the marketing, but kudos to the team that put together such a pretty package.

NO, this book makes no nutritional sense

NO, just no, this book is not a good source for eliminating sugar from your diet. Here is why...

If you want to quit sugar, then quit sugar. That means eliminating added sugar from you diet by not eating it any any of its processed forms; sugar, honey, agave, brown rice syrup.

The last part of the book is full of sweet treat recipes made with brown rice syrup! Yuck!!! That's not quitting sugar, thats just replacing it dressed up as a "healthier" version of itself. If you want to quit eating sugar - stop eating desserts. Curb your sweet tooth with whole fruits or healthy smoothies.

Also she cautions about eating certain fruits because they have too much of "bad sugar" in them. I do not suggest taking nutritional advise from anyone who claims that it is better to eat a sweet treat made with brown rice syrup or stevia over eating whole fruits that have tons of nutrients and fiber necessary for a balanced nutritious diet.

Good Only for Beautiful Pictures and Recipes

The 8 week program is very contradictory and vague. I thought that week by week it would help me cut out different types of sugars and sweets, but one week is just titled "Face The Demons" in which she talks about how others will negatively react to your sugar cut. Yes, that is important to note, but it is not a step in an 8 week plan detailing what I am supposed to eat. I am left with questions like can I eat tomatoes? What is the fructose content of certain veggies and fruits? Can I even eat fruit? She vague references cutting fruit but her recommended recipes for each week often have fruit in them. Fruit is really demonized in this book yet half of the "sugar-free" dessert recipes are full of berries and other fruits. The assertion too that this book helps you plan your pantry and fridge needs is wrong. The recipes call for unique and difficult to find ingredients, and many require a food processor. None of this is outlined in the "Getting Equipped" section.

I like the general idea of this book but would look to another to find out the real science about sugar. Nothing here is cited and she often gives her own opinion ("I believe we were meant to eat the whole food" - referencing animal fat and skin in Week 2). She notes in the same week that sugar messes with our hormones, yes, but how?? Some facts to back that up would be great.

Finally, most recipes in the book can be found on the IQS website. I recommend this book only if you are looking for a beautiful cookbook or want something tangible to help kickstart your sugar detox. For the price, it was worth it for me but do not expect a real step by step guide.

Myths of male dominance and Marxism

"Myths of Male Dominance" is a collection of articles written by anthropologist Eleanor Burke Leacock. The first edition was published in 1981 by Monthly Review Press, a Marxist publisher associated with Paul Sweezy. The present edition is published by Haymarket Books, apparently a front for a certain Trotskyist group. Leacock's ideological perspective is a curious blend of dogmatic Marxism and feminism. Normally, I wouldn't recommend a book heavily loaded with Marxist rhetoric. However, if you can look pass it, "Myths of Male Dominance" does include some interesting material.

The main section of the book deals with the Montagnais-Naskapi, an American Indian people in Canada, among which Leacock carried out her fieldwork. This particular people, also known as Innu, is very small but nevertheless played an important role in scientific and political debates during the immediate post-war period. The Montagnais-Naskapi were "primitive" hunter-gatherers, but nevertheless had private property. To many, this disproved the idea (politically associated with Marx and Engels), that humanity had originally lived in a state of primitive communism. Indeed, it was explicitly used as an anti-Marxist argument. During her fieldwork and historical research, Leacock realized two things. First, private property didn't exist among the Montagnais-Naskapi before the arrival of the French colonialists and the establishment of the fur trade. Before that, this people did indeed live in an egalitarian society without real chiefs, where all property was held in common. Second, even after colonization, it was only the right to trap animals for the fur trade which was private. For hunting and gathering in general, all land was still considered a vast commons.

Leacock also made a more startling discovery: before colonialism, Montagnais-Naskapi bands had gender equality. Their society wasn't patriarchal. Only with the advent of colonialism and the expansion of the fur trade, did the bands become patriarchal. The private property that accumulated through trapping, trade and plunder made the nuclear family the most important unit of production (rather than the band based on extended families). The nuclear families were headed by men, who in addition controlled the trapping rights. The bands involved in the fur trade were also led by men. Male band leaders used women as virtual slave labour, and often formalized the situation by marrying them! Women were in effect turned into capital. The introduction of patriarchy was eagerly supported by the Jesuit missionaries active in this part of Canada. At the same time, the journals of Jesuit father Le Jeune are an important historical source, since he encountered a communal lifestyle that must have been dominant before colonialism. Le Jeune forthrightly describes the equality among the sexes, the lax attitude towards children, and the ease with which one family adopted the children of another. Also, polygyny and polyandry were rampant. Le Jeune often had to admonish his male Christian converts not to let the women be in charge, and also instructed the parents to discipline the children. On a more bizarre note, the Montagnais-Naskapi women had the right to dispose of Iroquis prisoners of war, and often took part in torturing them!

Naturally, these research results disprove the musings of those who claim that patriarchy is a human universal, and it's not surprising that several of the later texts in this anthology are polemics against "sociobiology", that notorious pseudoscience. Leacock's dissection of Steven Goldberg's "The inevitability of patriarchy" is particularly entertaining, more so since Goldberg's reply is included. Poor Steve.

There are two themes running through this book. One is that Euro-centric anthropologists are poorly equipped to understand the authority structures of hunters and gatherers. Strictly speaking, some hunters and gatherers *don't have* authority structures. The chiefs or headmen are simply people informally chosen to represent the band when dealing with outsiders. (In the case of the Montagnais-Naskapi, the Jesuits understood this very well and insisted that these "chiefs" should be formally elected, formally recognized by the French and given real powers.) Authority within the band is fluid and based on consensus. Those who have the most knowledge of a certain situation, take the lead in that particular situation. Decisions are carried out by the same people who make them. Nor is there a sharp distinction between the "domestic" and "public" spheres, since the main unit of production is the band itself, being made up of several extended families. That women "only" do tasks associated with the "domestic" sphere in modern Europe doens't mean that they lack power. In this kind of society, characterized by egalitarianism and equality, division of labour based on sex doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as in a patriarchal class society. The fact that women are excluded from certain male rituals doesn't mean much either (besides, the men are excluded from some female rituals). Euro-centric anthropologists automatically assume that the male activities are more important, but that's simply patriarchal gender bias. Leacock also mentions several examples of peoples where women carry out tasks associated with the "public" sphere. For instance, the hunts of small game among the Mbuti "Pygmies" in Central Africa are carried out jointly by men and women. Here, not even a division of labour seems to exist.

The second theme is the idea that patriarchy is a product of colonialism. While the first theme is correct, this second notion is more problematic. There are indeed examples of patriarchy being introduced by colonialism. Or, better put, being made possible by the economic and political changes accompanying colonialism. The Montagnais-Naskapi are a case in point. But many patriarchal societies emerged before the advent of colonialism. Leacock even discusses one such culture: the Aztecs of Mexico. Other obvious examples would be the Muslim, Hindu or Chinese civilizations. It's therefore unclear why the author puts such a heavy emphasis on colonialism. The reason must be ideological, perhaps some kind of "Third World Marxist" perspective?

A more ironic problem is the tension between Leacock's dogmatic Marxism (she constantly invokes Frederick Engels) and her feminism. Leacock seems to assume that the world historic defeat of the female sex came about as a result of private property, and that this was connected with the rise of agriculture and trade. Hierarchies and the state emerged from the same processes. But is this really true? Even Leacock herself mentions female chiefs in her book, most notably among the Balonda, an African people visited by none other than Livingstone. These chiefs had real, hierarchic power and there was certainly private property: one of the events which proved (to both Livingstone and Leacock) that these women really had power, was that one of them claimed an ox Livingstone had intended for the male he mistakenly assumed was in charge! Further, at least one high culture had curiously egalitarian traits: the Indus Valley Civilization. The status of its woman population is unknown, but this culture certainly had trade, agriculture and large towns. This is usually associated with social stratification and empire building, of which the Indus culture had none. Minoan Crete might be another "anomaly": a peaceful culture with goddesses, but hierarchic. The Minoans also traded and had agriculture. Leacock's Marxist scheme doesn't seem to add up. Indeed, if women have been on an equal footing with men only in bands based on hunting and gathering, where on earth does that leave us? Should we all become Montagnais-Naskapi and hunt caribou in the woods?

The most interesting part of "Myths of Male Dominance" is the section on Montagnais-Naskapi and the discussion of decision-making processes among hunters and gatherers. The more theoretical sections feel too haunted by the spectre of...Frederick Engels.

The use of anthropometric data, although no substitute for good design or sound professional judgment should be viewed as one of the many tools required in the design process. This comprehensive overview of anthropometrics consists of three parts.

The first part deals with the theory and application of anthropometrics and includes a special section dealing with physically disabled and elderly people. It provides the designer with the fundamentals of anthropometrics and a basic understanding of how interior design standards are established. The second part contains easy-to-read, illustrated anthropometric tables, which provide the most current data available on human body size, organized by age and percentile groupings. Also included is data relative to the range of joint motion and body sizes of children. The third part contains hundreds of dimensioned drawings, illustrating in plan and section the proper anthropometrically based relationship between user and space. The types of spaces range from residential and commercial to recreational and institutional, and all dimensions include metric conversions.

In the Epilogue, the authors challenge the interior design profession, the building industry, and the furniture manufacturer to seriously explore the problem of adjustability in design. They expose the fallacy of designing to accommodate the so-called average man, who, in fact, does not exist. Using government data, including studies prepared by Dr. Howard Stoudt, Dr. Albert Damon, and Dr. Ross McFarland, formerly of the Harvard School of Public Health, and Jean Roberts of the U.S. Public Health Service, Panero and Zelnik have devised a system of interior design reference standards, easily understood through a series of charts and situation drawings. About the Author
Julius Panero, AIA, ASID, is a practicing architect, interior designer, and an associate professor of interior design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. He has taught interior design for the last twenty years and was the former chairperson of the Interior Design department at FIT. A graduate of Pratt Institute, where he received a bachelor of architecture's degree, and Columbia University, where he received a master of science degree in urban planning, Panero is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Interior Designers, and a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, London. Licensed to practice architecture in New York, Panero is a principal in the consulting firm of Panero Zelnik Associates, Architects/Interior Designers. He is also the author of Anatomy for Interior Designers and a contributing author to Time-Saver Standards. Martin Zelnik, AIA, ASID, NCARB, is a practicing architect, interior designer, and an assistant professor of interior design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where he has taught interior design for the last ten years. A graduate of Brandeis University, where he received a bachelor of fine arts degree, and Columbia University, where he earned a master of architecture degree, Zelnik is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the New York Society of Architects, the Interior Design Educators Council, and the American Society of Interior Designers. A special consultant to the National Council of Interior Design Qualification, Zelnick is a principal in the New York consulting firm of Panero Zelnik Associates, Architects/Interior Designers.

In examining the relationship between human dimension and dining spaces, the areas of most concern to the designer are the clearances around the table and the number of people a table of a particular size can accommodate. The clearance between the edge of the table and the wall or any other physical obstruction must at the very least accommodate two elements: (1) the space occupied by the chair and (2) the maximum body breadth of a person of a larger body size as he circulates between the chair an the wall. In dealing with the space occupied by the chair, it should be noted that its position, relative to the edge of the table, will change several times during the course of a meal. Towards the end of a meal, perhaps while the person is engaged in informal conversation or in an effort to change body posture, the chair may be extended farther from the table. As a person leaves the table, the chair may be located even farther away. Comfortable clearance should assume the chair to be at its farthest distance from the table.

Human Dimension & Interior Space provides information about interior space requirements and human dimensions that are indispensable to the beginning design student or the practicing professional. Its drawings and charts are clear, easy to understand and even easier to apply. It should be part of every design professional's library or student's required reading list. It is also refreshing to note that this book has integrated barrier free design/accessibility issues into each space type that is covered, and not made it a separate issue.

I couldn't live without it.

As a licensed Interior Designer I refer to this book frequently. To determine the space required for any activity from opening a file drawer to dining, watching a movie or simply removing an object from a shelf this book gives it to you straight with no fluff. It contains simple but indispensible scientific data for the 95th percentile and beyond. Whether you are a student or a professional, in Interior Design, Architecture or Industrial Design I highly recommend Human Dimension and Interior Space.

Poor substitute for "Time Saver Standards"

I bought this book as an inexpensive alternative to "TIME SAVER STANDARDS FOR INTERIOR DESIGN AND SPACE PLANNING" by Joseph Dechiara and found it to be a poor substitute. While this book has useful information on human dimensions it falls short when portraying ergonomic information. OK for an introductory book on the subject but "TIME SAVER STANDARDS..." is a far superior reference.

If you've ever gone to mindfulness classes, you'll learn & do much more than this book involves you in. It's a nice learners beginning book but if you've done a mindfulness program or gone on a retreat, this book won't tell you anything new really
