I got tired of cooking the 25 recipes inside my old cookbook. I tried scanning this book and immediately enticed to cook them. The recipes are a little fancy, but the taste is perfect for me. Well, even if you have a cookbook on the side of your kitchen, I believe that there will always be room to explore. So I just use this book as a guide. So far my family members love our dinner every night. The electric pressure cooker is a useful device at home.

Great cookbook for electric pressure cooker. I can instantly tell whether or not a recipe will turn out well and taste delicious. The recipes are super easy and delicious. I could make dinner for the next year using only these recipes. Usually when I read a cookbook, there are only a handful of recipes that seem like they would be great. Thanks for a great cookbook that's gotten me so excited about my new Instant Pot!

Consider this book a must read!

My wife and I are leaving shortly for a five week trip to Ireland. This will be our first Ireland trip and, most probably, the only such trip we will be able to make there.

We have purchased a number of travel guides and have found most of them informative and of value in planning our trip.

However, the book "A Secret Map of Ireland" is the only book that puts life into our trip planning experience and we strongly recommend reading it to anyone who wants to get some insite into the country and people they are going to visit!

Fun approach to a country with many diverse attractions. I felt like I was seeing it with a friend who had an insider's perspective. Rather informal in a way that appealed to me. Having my Eyewitness travel guide by my side helped me get my bearings. Glad I bought it as I may find it handy to refer to when I'm there.

32 parts stand for the whole island

A longtime journalist for the Irish Times, Boland's narratives move along generally with efficiency, detail, and organization. Her style, honed at the newspaper, tends more towards that of the personal feature granted by her employer than that of her poetry. The imagery's less potent and the facts more present than I expected. The best of these short chapters, one for a sight seen in each of the thirty-two counties, reveal Boland's ability to employ synecdoche-- in which a quirky or overlooked part stands for the whole nation.

For instance, the border in the Armagh visit to the Tayto factory at Tandragee Castle reveals a great detail, in impressively subtle observation and comparison, about the cultural differences on each side of the frontier. Similarly, the Fermanagh example of the border hamlets at Pettigo-Tullyhommon & Belcoo/Blacklion show the daily idiosyncracies of phone service, postal delivery, and commercial trade across a sturdy if nearly invisible divide. Another rift she enters in the Meath visit to the Columban missionary fathers' nearly empty but once filled former seminary and the graying and diminishing ranks of the Trappists at Waterford's Mount Melleray opens up deftly the fading echo of retreating Catholicism in an era of declining vocations and secularized lifestyles.

At Malin Head in Donegal, I liked her treatment of how visibility for weather forecasting still depends in a technological era on a human observer looking at the sky and checking gauges on the hour no matter what. This attention for the telling detail is Boland at her best. When she gets to the Sligo "fairy theme park" run by one "Melody, Baroness of Leyne, Ph.D.," all Boland needs to place the dreadful place in its kitschy niche is a deadpan recital of its plastic (or "resin") figurines. The edge the author reveals in her portrayal, however, avoids cruelty and she manages out of a depressing sight to conjure up the appeal of how it's not what we see that makes it inspiring or tawdry, it's what we do with the sights we see that manages to transcend the banal. A tricky point, and this moment, perhaps due to its depth of meaning, makes for me the highlight of this collection.

Yet, many other attractions she locates do not, in her telling, rise above the dutiful depiction of accumulated statistics or information. Staying three days on "Great" Skellig Michael, she transmits little of the gales and the sheer drops and the exhilarating vertigo that must be part of every lucky visitor's memory. How she got there by navigating Irish bureaucracy takes up much of her account; the stay's anticlimactic. Dan Donnelly's long arm in Kildare, carols sung in Laois, a cluttered Temple of Isis in Carlow, or a Raggedy Bush in Kilkenny are examples of the topics she discusses, but while all of these are admittedly interesting, they do not leap off the page or remain long in the memory.

A long recital of the intriguing journey to Africa's Mountains of the Moon by Surgeon Major Thomas Heazle Parke 1887-89 appears better suited to a non-Irish account. A monkey's afterlife fame in Cork, a cabinet of curiousities in Tyrone, or Derry's immense Lough Neagh all intermittently engage you, but the energy dissipates. I suppose the sad fate of the Millennium Tree that Boland had been issued in Wicklow may prove a metaphor for this gathering of attempts at surprising one's self with the hidden but accessible corners of one's own native land. The destination may disappoint or remain stubbornly elusive, but the sense of wonder and mystery still pulls Boland, and you, along to the next stop.

About the Author

Jeanette Araya was born in Vina del Mar, Chile. She migrated to America with her parents in 1966 and grew up in suburban Los Angeles. Jeanette, a former nurse, is owner of the clothing line, “The Mosh Pit” and mother of two.

Bloodline, The Araya Story, my review.

The book opens peacefully enough, " It was a warm February morning in Whittier, California... ". .... Suddenly , you are teleported to early Feb. 2002, a very private moment, frozen in time for the Arayas. A moment, where this story begins.

The life of Mr. Javier Araya is told by his daughter Jeanette, the second of 7 children, as she felt to honor her father's and the Araya family legacy. Jeanette chronicles her father's beginnings, the early years in Chile, the middle years in suburban Los Angeles, and Maywood, to the latter years in Moreno Valley California. She details the success and challenges of a man trying to raise his family of seven children with his wife outside his native land of Chile. She recounts his inner struggles to find peace with God, the Catholic Church, the outside pressures and influences of heavy metal music, and it's demonic overtures on his family and mainly his son Tom Araya.

The book is not about the band Slayer, but Jeanette does go into the early Slayer years and the iconic success of the band including her brother Tom's accession into the band's lead singer status.

She briefly introduces you to her siblings. You will enjoy uniquely amusing accounts of the Araya family throughout the book. Time before the Internet , video games, cell and wireless phones. You'll be particularly interested in Tom 's birthday gifts to his father. But you will also be privy to some very serious moments of turmoil and grief.

In summary, I really enjoyed the book. I opened the cover and couldn't put it down, read it in one sitting . The 122 pages are flowing and well written... an excellent read. You get a sense , a true prospective of what growing up "Araya" was. Jeanette should be very proud of her father, family, and this book.

Awful, read the original instead

Let me first say I have a master's degree (working on my doctorate) and work in the in the complex legal market.

I also read and/or listen the original "How to Win Friends and Influence People" at least once every couple years and firmly believe in it. It is good, solid advice. I believe the concept of this book was a great idea. That is where my praise stops.

This version on the "Digital Age" however is AWEFUL. There are soooooo many metaphors, analogies, and overly forced advanced English word choices that this book is unreadable. You literally have to "digest" every paragraph on the meaning of the language alone. It made this a painful read. I wonder if the authors were sitting around trying to make themselves sound smart or see how complex they can make this book. If Dale Carnegie were around today, he would be scratching his head in disgust. After all the original concept of this book was for the reader to function in any scenario, not to insult his/her intelligence. The original book was written for the common person which is why the it was such a success.

Take my advice skip this version and read the original instead.

A "Must Read" Game Changer for Managers of Relationships-Meaning Everyone!

One of the greatest books ever written in its original form, the new book delves into the challenges that this digital generation of emails, and cells, Facebook and Twitter faces in humanizing these newer abilities to "touch base" while acknowledging that there is no replacement for face to face contact with more sensitive subjects, as in a reprimand or a communicating heartfelt thoughts and feelings with a loved one. There are "permanent in nature" messages we communicate when we press "send" on that email that are irreversible. Thus I found this area of the book very cutting edge. Too much of the time people in both business and personal relations are writing from an emotional focus, and "send" is the culmination or exclamation point of those emotions with in many cases irreversible results (its in black and white with your name and a time stamp!)

A quote from the book is fitting here.
"If you need to discuss a mistake or gaffe that somebody made, its best to do it in person or over the phone. Save your written communication for praise and constructive advice."

Other areas of the book for this digital world were very enlightening as well. The proven fact for instance that the internet while availing us many conveniences in the way of information, has made us more shallow thinkers, more impatient with each other, (service personnel, friends and loved ones). A famous movie critic in 2010 was noted as saying that there is a skitterish quality to this generation, not considerate of others, only in the getting of theirs, and quickly.

You know that sense of isolation you feel when a person is using a device in your presence or that eye contact with another human that is impeded while they are sending a text or otherwise disallowing a form of interaction that was once taken for granted?

While this book is not a cure for that it is certainly a balm in recognizing when you yourself have trampled over someone's feelings by negating their importance in your life. All people are important. The checker at the market lighting up when you speak her name! (its right there on her name tag!)
Also, remembering people's names is not easy. But is one of the most crucial areas of being successful in all aspects of human contact. This is a fact from the original Carnegie text that has lost none of its impact. I find the more I say a person's name the easier it is to remember, and it personalizes the thought I am trying to bring across to them.

I was shocked when the book ended. I wanted more. It is definitely on my re-read list.
A couple more quotes from the book I liked though the whole of the book "must" be taken in, these but snippets:
"He who sows courtesy reaps friendship."
"Giving away credit is a magical multiplier."
"Questions allow you to create a conversation-in any medium-that can lead to a better place for all involved. And it allows everybody to feel that they were involved in shaping the outcome."

I became a better, re-wired and "more connected" human being.

Stick with the original

I have the original How To Win Friends And Influence People in paperback and on my Kindle. Seems to be a pretty solid book that makes many valid points.

When I found this new version of the book, I thought to myself "This book probly shows how to apply these same techniques in emails, facebook, etc.".

I'm about 1/4 through the book, and it's almost nauseating. I hoped that the bad reviews on this book were just misunderstandings or people being mean, but they aren't. The writing in this book is absolutely terrible.

In the original book, an idea is presented, and then several stories are told in order to demonstrate that point. This book doesn't do that. In fact, it makes no sense at all. It just goes on and on and on, page after page of babble.

My recommendation is this: Stick with the original book and learn to apply those techniques to the digital world on your own.

Mike Snell spends his work life helping teams build great software that exceeds the expectations of end users. He runs the Solutions division at CEI ( www.ceiamerica.com ). Mike and his team deliver architecture, consulting, and mentoring to clients looking for help with enterprise projects, commercial software, mobile applications, or cloud-based solutions. He is also a Microsoft Regional director.

Lars Powers is currently the director of application development at Newgistics, Inc. Prior to Newgistics, he held various technical management positions at 3M and spent many years with Microsoft as a platform evangelist focused on emerging technologies.

Should be named .NET Technologies Using Visual Studio

This book should be named .NET Technologies Using Visual Studio because it doesn't start out about Visual Studio, and it doesn't really end about Visual Studio, it goes over all about the technologies that Visual Studio works with and how to use them in Visual Studio 2015. If you want a great overview of all the technologies (Microsoft and non-Microsoft) and how to work with them in Visual Studio 2015, then this is your book. But it isn't as in-depth as I would like on anything, not even Visual Studio 2015.

I learned a lot, it's a great book for someone like me that is getting back into .NET technologies and wanting to learn all the new technologies and how they fit together, and which are supported by Microsoft. Did you know you can use Visual Studio 2015 for HTML, Java, Android, and Apple apps, etc? I didn't until I read this book.

However, if you want to go through Visual Studio in-depth, and learn about all the different screens, options, menus, and checkboxes - then buy Professional Visual Studio 2015 by Johnson.

I was hoping to learn Visual Studio in-depth before learning each of the technologies, and Professional Visual Studio 2015 by Johnson is my only choice as I write this review. But after I read that, then I'm going to read this book again, Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Unleashed, as a great intro to using all the other technologies that I still have to learn. I really liked it, and found it very interesting. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it really should be renamed to .NET Technologies using Visual Studio 2015 and it isn't as in-depth on Visual Studio as I was hoping for. But still, a great book.

I bought this book for the purpose of learning how to use Visual Studio (VS) for developing applications, whether on the desktop or on the web. I don't have an extensive background as a programmer (mainly just VBA writing in Excel) but I knew one could use VS for some professional looking applications and so I bought this book to help get me into the program. As of today, I'm approximately half-way through reading this and I'm ready to move on to a new text like Murach's C# 2015 (just purchased) because I needed a guide to actually start building something in VS.

So here's my take: this book is basically a good overview of what can be found inside VS and what you can do with the .NET framework. It scratches the surface on a lot of topics but doesn't have the time or scope to actually get a true beginner (like myself) into building something/anything in the application. It has a brief chapter on the basics of C# and Visual Basic, but doesn't take time to explain anything about object-oriented programming; which is fair because that is not really the purpose of this book.

Visual Studio and the .NET framework is very broad in terms of what can be developed. There are whole books devoted to things like ASP.net or WPF applications and this book, even at 1320 pages, is only able to just introduce these capabilities and give the very basics of what is involved. Therefore this book is good for helping someone, like myself who knows nothing about .NET, get an overview of what all in involved/possible. To be completely frank, I see this book as the cliff notes version of the VS users manual. After this quick read, I don't know how often I'll refer back.

A very good solid book regarding Visual Studio 2015. I have been using VS 2008 Community Edition for the last 7 years. When I uograded to Windows 10 I decided to move to VS 2015.

As one would expect, a lot has changed over the last 7 years in the Visual Studio environment and it was very usefull to have a guidebook to help navigate the changes.

I was specifically interested in the changes in Visual Studio Extensibility and Automation. The chapters on those subjects are well written and helped get me started on upgrading my Add-ins to VS 2015.

My only real criticism of the book is in the discussion of the various editions of Visual Studio 2015. The comparison of the ecitions was well done and the author explained why the book focused on the Professional edition. Fair enough and reasonable. However, I deel the author should have pointed out that the FREE Community Edition can be largely upgraded to the $800.00 Professional Edition by downloading and installing the various pieces separetly.

The book is an excellent purchase if you want a good guide to Visual Studio 2015.
